Does the OpenGL patch help Rendition users?

by Graeme Nas » Wed, 28 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

I've read a lot about the new GPL OpenGL patch but I'm not really sure
what it does. Is it just for TNT cards or will it help me and my 8MB
Herc Thriller? (On a P200).

Thanks for any help,

My system specs- No overclocking
P200mmx
Asus TXP4
64megs SDRAM
Stealth 2 S220
Orchid R3D
Ensoniq Audio PCI
Windows 98

When the patch came out I tried running the OpenGL rasterizer. Since I
only got 0.5 FPS using the Windows GL driver, I installed Rendition's
latest beta OpenGL ICD. All of the menus had transparency issues, with
previous screens flashing on and off. Knowing where the buttons were I
went to the game. It looked better than 3Dfx and almost as good as
Rendition but only ran at around 15 FPS at The Ring (640x480) in
training mode. Apart from the frame rate, the only other problem was
the menus flashing in the black areas while I was driving! If the only
other choice for me was software rendering, I'd use it.

I also tried running the driver with the beta 3Dfx OpenGL ICD but
could not get GPL to launch at all.

I say stick with your Hercules, Rendition is the way to go with this
sim.
Cheers,
Chris

The fastest API possible for Rendition is RRedline. This is as close as
you can get to a "native" API. No API is truly native, but RRedline is as
close as you get (like Glide for 3dfx users). This should mean that
Rendition cards would work better with RRedline than OpenGL.

Last night I brought the OpenGL patch home from work and tested it on my
Stealth II (rendition). It was a little bugged, but it brought out between
10 and 11 fps during practice... It look quite ok, though, it really did.
So I guess the TNT users will be mightily happy with this. Should be
interesting to see performance figures for this patch on a TNT...

I think the only thing that will help you and your system is a faster
CPU... The Thriller is just fine, both with your current cpu and your
future PII...
