GP3 and Voodoo2 Problems

by Colin Taylo » Tue, 01 Aug 2000 04:00:00

I've just come off the 'phone from Hasbro UK tech support. They say that
they are unaware of any problems having been reported with GP3 and the
Voodoo2. It should work, they say.

The only thing they could suggest (for the <1 fps problem) was setting the
Hardware Acceleration slider to a lower value (in System
Properties/Performance/Advanced Graphics Settings). I haven't tried this yet
as I am at work.

So, TO ALL PEOPLE WITH VOODOO2 PROBLEMS, please phone Hasbro technical
support and tell them that there is a problem otherwise nothing will be done
about it.

Hasbro UK are on 01454 893900. Other countries numbers are in the README
file.

Thanks, that patch only allows the game to recognise the existance of 8MB
cards.

My problem with the 12MB card is that the performance is terrible. About 1
fps compared to about 16fps using the unaccelerated 2D card.

1 fps? Yer lucky! I only get 0.1 fps with my 8M voodoo 2. I presume your PO
is sky high with the V2, are some of the graphics corrupted as well?

Yes, same as you. PO is 600% plus. (see bleow)

BTW I have just tried Hasbro's "Hardware Acceleration slider" suggestion and
it made no difference.  I called them back, and had quite a long
conversation with them about the setup of my machine.  The result of which
was that they still believe it SHOULD work OK, and claim to have tested it
on a PII 266 with Voodoo2.  The bloke at Hasbro has now gone off to talk to
one of the developers.  He said he would 'phone me back....  (here's hoping)

Colin

P.S.    The PO may in fact be a lot higher! Why? Well the PO display only
shows the last 3 digits and then "wraps around".  I noticed this when the PO
is in the 900% plus range. You can actually see it wrap from 990% to 10%,
etc.

I tried that yesterday. It made a difference - anything other than full
right and the mirrors appeared in the middle of the steering wheel as well
as the wing mirrors!

hoping)
I didn't think of phoning them, figured I get the old runaround. I e-mailed
them instead, no reply yet.

Yer lucky again! I can get it round to (1)300% and more on my Celeron 400
o/c to 450.

I gave them a call today and pointed them to this newsgroup so they will be
aware there is a problem.

Marc,  thanks for the input, and thanks for phoning Hasbro.

I would still urge other Voodoo2 owners to phone Hasbro so that they can
guage the scope of the problem and gather technical information on what
machine setups are affected.   It might also be useful if anybody DOESN'T
have this problem with their Voodoo2 contacts them (or posts on this
newsgroup).  The only posts that I've seen from Voodoo2 owners that were
happy were from the owners of high-end machines (P733 and above).
Personally, I don't regard hiding the problem with enormous amounts of
processor power as a satisfactory answer.

Works fine on my 12MV Voodoo2. Make sure you select the "lower texture
detail for 3D cards" option in the graphics section (under Advanced).

Made no difference in performance to me (or were you refering just to
texture corruption).
P.S.  What processor do you have?

Runs quite a bit smoother. Actually I wasn't able to get a smooth
frame rate until I selected low-detail textures.

P2 300. 128MB RAM.

I found a compete differerece in occupancy if you use the front wing view -
occupancy is only 50 - 60% and the game is still a lot of fun. Spec p2 450,
128 and vood 2 12meg

GP3 and Voodoo2 Problems

I am coming in 'halfway' through this thread so I am not really sure what
problems you are talking about with GP3 and Voodoo 2 cards, but I am
experiencing no problems (i.e. occupancy always 100% or less, even in the
rain!).
My system specs are:-  PII 450, 128 MB ram, 12 MB Monster 3D II.
Of course I get the 'slowdown' in the first corner first lap... 120-140%.
