but I was kinda hoping to tackle the NASCAR tracks in F1 or similar car. :)

There was some early work done on the truck mod, but I think most of the
mod makers are focusing on F1 Challenge, the next F1 version to be released
this June. You can take the Thunder tracks and copy them over to the F1
2k2/mods track folders and use them, but you also need an altered
terrain.ini file to give the sim the ability to deal with track aprons.
I think you will find sims that start out as open wheel products will
handle F1 modding better than trying to convert a fender based sim to F1.
However, for at least the first Thunder effort, that was little more than a
mod itself of F1 2k2.

I also played a demo of a racing sim for X-Box, and it looked very
pretty. Can't recall the name of it, but it seemed pretty fun and the
handling was okay. The replays were comparable to GT3. The only thing I
don't like is the controller for the damned X-Box. It's a long way to
reach the shift up/down buttons. ;)
Way OT, I also took a look at the Enter The Matrix screenies for the PC
version, and looks kinda interesting. I wonder if it sucks, tho.

I haven't seen it played yet, but my son is ***ing about it because
it has problems with his ATI 9500pro video card. (heck he's got a better
system than I have) I was gonna snoop around this weekend and see if I
could configure it better.

I know they were aiming for Nascar Thunder, but that title has not
seemed to inspire many mods. I think you will see just about all the mods
currently in development waiting for the release of F1 Challenge. That
should have all the improvements Thunder had(rolling starts, analog gauges
etc) but still have the backing of the current mod community.
I think The early 80's CART mod and the mid 90's CART mod were both the
projects of Thrasher. He got heavily involved in the F1 turbo mod and the
Senna tribute addon to the Turbo mod. I don't think he has the time now to
focus on CART projects. Although he did have several different chassis
built in a 3d program so it could be feasible to finish.
The F1 2k1 2002 CART beta was updated for f1 2002 and then that effort
was repainted with 2003 cars but that's about as far along as anyone has
gotten. The Wheel to Wheel site has screen shots of separate rewrite of
the CART mod with both Reynard and Lola chassis completed but it was
'supposed' to be finished in April..I don't know the current status of the
project.
