3Dfx or Riva 128 for racing sims?

by Stuart Brook » Mon, 17 Nov 1997 04:00:00

Hi all,

After reading countless posts I'm still not sure which route to follow.
My PC is a P100  with S3 Trio 64V+ :<( which needless to say doesn't cut it
with the latest or forthcoming racing titles.

The 3Dfx cards do appeal as they don't rely on brute CPU muscle too much,
but assuming I eventually overdrive to 200MMX then the overall 2D/3D
benefits of a Riva 128 would then win through.

  My questions are:

Does the 3Dfx run a native ported game better than it or a Riva runs the
D3D version?
If so what effect does increasing CPU horsepower have on their relative
performance?
How many future games will support 3Dfx native and D3D repectively?

The games I now play:
Network Q Rally Championship ( IRC is MUCH slower on my machine)
Sega Rally (2D so CPU is bottleneck - but better handling cars than NQRC)
F1GP2 (2D again)
Carmageddon (would benefit from 3D acceleration)

The games I would like to be able to play
Screamer Rally
Ubisoft F1
CART Precision Racing

Thanks for any help but please don't spend my money extravagantly as I can't
afford to upgrade everything!

Regards,

Stuart
