I'm still having problems with a bad hissing noise in the sim. I've
tried reducing the # of sounds heard as others suggested, but it
doesn't help. I'm using an AWE64 Soundblaster card. Are others with
this same setup getting the same results I am? Do I just need a better
sound card or what?

I've had the same thing going on. I've tried with my AWE 64 and a plain 'ol
Soundblaster 16. New drivers used as well. Reducing the number of sounds
doesn't help either. Go figure.

Don't know.. I've got a P2-233 w 64MB Ram, Stealth II video card, SB-AWE
64"GOLD", Windows 98, and I hear GPL through my headphones.

NO PROBLEMS whatsoever. No hiss, no crackle, no pop.

Just for the record, I can run a 20-car race at 640 x.. resolution, with
full graphic details on, detail-bias at 50%, and 6 sounds, and still get a
steady 36 fps in most cases. (occasional dip to 28-29).. but still good.

Just wondering what the rest of your game performance is like with the bad
sound. How are framerates? (It probably doesn't have anything to do with it,
but you never know..)

Btw.. I only get about 1 1/2 to 2 laps of replay time with my 64 MB.. think
I will upgrade next week to 128MB (Windows98 keeps crashing.. not GPL
related)

Tim:

I have an identical soundcard and don't hear a hissing.  At least I don't
think so..  Where is this sound apparent?  All the time, like from when you
start the sim until you exit?  If so, I definitely don't hear it.   I have
set the sound on 3 and 4 but don't hear an audible hissing noise. Just the
scrape scrape scrape of my car against the fences in Eau Rouge. (see:
http://www.voicenet.com/~jeffreyh/GPL/eaurouge_owie.zip for my biggest shunt
in EauRouge yet. It was with damage off but I launched off of the hill on
the left and it still looked amazing).

Great. Running a P300 with Creative blaster V2 8mb. With 19 cars and
max detail, I get 16-19 off the starting grid, and 26-32 after things
get going.

It's pretty evident all the time. I have a sweet set of Altec acs495
speakers, so I like to really crank it up to get the full grand prix
effect. :) At lower volume levels it's not too bad, but still there.

That hiss you hear may be wind/road noise. I noticed in the demo and do not
like it, however it is much less noticeable in the full. Similar system
same sound card.

No, I can hear the wind noise. This is static.

When I first loaded the full GPL game my Cambridge Soundworks Microworks
speakers chose RIGHT  then to die.  AAAAHHHHH!  Only the subwoofer works
now, giving a result like having cotton in your ears when you drive (which
is probably what they really did.) The sound came back for a while and I
did get to hear the Ferrari.  Wow is right.

Do you mean a hissing noise while you are in the***pit driving?
I presume you already know there is a road/tyre/wind noise, but I
just wanted to check you knew that :)

Weren't there a-lot of complaints about N2's sound as well??  Seems
like the hissing thing was mentioned back then as well.  I've always used
SB stuff and I've always thought they sound in Papyrus sims was slighty
noisey.

Nope.  I have the same complaint:  Ensoniq AudioPCI w/latest CL SB 64PCI
drivers, DX6, & Altec ACS45's, and it's from the engine sounds.  I unpacked the
sound.dat file and played the wavs seperately.  There's a gravelly static-like
quality to the sound that's annoying at a minimum, but downright criminal with
the Ferrari.  I don't know whether it's a hardware problem or a listener
preference, but I can't imagine the rapturous responses to the 312B engine
sound (or the others) if they're hearing what I hear.  You get enough to know
it's a great sound, if not for the static (maybe not the best word), but are
aggravated by the overall quality.    A bit like listening to blown speakers,
but they're not.  It really gets in the way of enjoying GPL.  In Sierra's tech
support FAQ for GPL, they suggest running DXSETUP from the CD and checking if
the sound drivers show as "certified" for Direct X.  Did that and CL's latest
(for this card) are not.  Still, I haven't seen this problem elsewhere.
Hmmmmmmmmmm.
