N2: Dega Setup Problem

by Steve Sarl » Tue, 13 May 1997 04:00:00

I'm having some probs with my setups for Dega.  It seems that no matter
what stearing lock I use the stearing is erattic.  I can't seem to keep it
in a straight line.  Sometimes I can come out of a corner in complete
controll and sometimes it will push up into the wall and no amount of
steering will affect it.  Entrys are also affected the same way.  It seems
to be an allmost random affect.  I also have trouble keeping a straight
line down the straights.  I've not had this problem at any other tracks and
have only recently begun driving Dega.  I am using a homemade wheel and
just put in a new pot when this started.  I do plan on getting some more
pots of various values and investigating that possible cause.  I was hoping
on getting some advice concerning other possible causes in case changing
pots does not affect the problem.

   Thank You.

Make sure you don't have steering help turned on.

I've never actually used that feature.  I've finally managed to get some
good laps.  Well decent at least.  Seems that whenever I get into traffic
it's worse.  I'm wondering if there's any adjustment on the setup that
could affect the cars re-action to the wind coming off the other cars?
Assuming that's what it is.

You do lose a lot of front downforce and a little rear downforce when
following someone in the draft. However, based on your description, I'd say
you're probably suffering from a PIO (military talk: pilot-induced
oscillation) due to a drop in the frame rate. When you get into traffic,
particularly on machines without 3D acceleration, the frame rate tends to
drop rather dramatically. You make small steering corrections, but the car
doesn't seem to be reacting as quickly, so you subconsciously starting
making larger steering corrections. Taken to extremes, you end up spinning
the car.

As an experiment, try turning off car detail and see if that helps. If so,
you might want to start fiddling with detail levels until you can get
something you can live with.
