GeForce 4 Set-up ?

by Brian McLerno » Sat, 26 Oct 2002 03:33:19

I just upgraded my vid card from a GeForce2  MX-400 64mb to a GeForce4 Ti
4200 128mb.  Installation was a breeze and I was all set to enjoy those
screaming frame rates.  However in both GPL and N2002 my framerates were
LOWER than with the GF2.  I was usually getting between 26-36 fps with the
GF2 and am only achieving 19-25 with the GF4.  F1 2002 seems to run a little
smoother but that's about it  I have the Vida Max program for setting up the
card set to the defaults.  Any ideas why I'm getting lower frame or hints of
settings to try?  My specs were:

Windows 98SE
AMD Athlom 1.2 GB
768MB SDRam PC133
Asus A7A266 DDR/SDR mobo
Asus AGP 64MB V7100 Pro T
GeForce2 MX-400
(Now Daytona GeForce Ti 4200 128mb)
SB Live Value 5.1
40 & 20 GB IBM HDs
DirectX 8.1a

Thanks!

what is this Vida Max for..?

Simple fact....if you take out an MX 400 and replace it with a Ti 4200 you
will have alot higher frame rates.

So the issues here are other contributary factors.

Namely.....drivers and utilities.

Which drivers did you use with GF2 and now...?

Do you have any utilities which involve graphic settings...?

Easy to help you after answering these two Q.

Have you tried opengl? I upgraded from a geforce 2ti to a 4200 with 128 mb,
and now have about the same framerates, but with 2*aa en all options on
(framerate 30-80)

Make sure you update your drivers; especially to one of the 40.xx series,
they make a big difference in GF4 performance.

Aydee:
Sorry for the typo, it's NVida Max, a little program for setting
V-synch, textures, clock speed, etc.  Third party I think.
Was using the 4.13.01.2183 drivers on the GF2, not the newest but they
worked great for me.  Using the 4.13.01.2980 driver from the CD that came
with it, will check for updates after emailing you.  No other graphic
setting utilities.  Thanks!

My advice is to try the 30.82 and 40.xx drivers in a direct comparison.

Take that Nvidia Max thing out of the equation.

Then do some fps benchmarking.....use Nascar 2002,or Analyze in 3D Config in
F1 2002.

Then choose which you prefer.

Only after all is running well with installation and drivers should you
entertain utilities.

Good luck.

Brian, it's been a while that I've used Nvmax, but since it's a bit older
and didn't get updated, maybe it doesn't work properly with the drivers
anymore. Many of the driver parameters got renamed, so the parameters Nvmax
sets may not be recognized by your drivers.

I'd try Rivatuner (version 2.0 RC 12), which has a few less options but is
constantly updated with newer drivers. It's perfectly possible that although
you think you've turned off Vsync in Nvmax, in truth it's still on, etc.

I'd also try the 29.80 drivers. They're a bit more modern than the 21.8x,
have excellent image quality and are as fast or faster than the 21.8x,
although the speed diff probably isn't substantial.

The 41.03 are probably even faster, but I don't know about their visual
quality under 3d. The 40.xx were a little less good in terms of visual
quality than the 29.80.

2 tips:
-Get Detonator Destroyer.  Uninstall the current drivers, reboot in
VGA mode, run Det Dest, reboot, then install the latest drivers (I've
been happy with the 30.8x's - can't remember the exact ver).  May be
more steps than needed, but works every time for me.
-Get RivaTuner.  Don't install it until you've got the drivers setup.
NvMax I think went out of date with the latest Det's, and displayed
some seriously weird behavior last time I used it.  These apps work by
modifying the registry, and if nVidia changes the keys in a particular
driver rev (and the values in the keys for various settings), you can
get very screwed up by an out of date version (hence it would be a
good idea to run Det Dest to clean out your system of nVidia files and
reg keys).

Have you deleted all the remaining parts of your older NVidia drivers? This
may be one big problem and so easily to solve:

Try detonatordestroyer from the page

www.guru3d.com

and folleow exactly the onscreen instructions. Then install the new drivers,
this did it for me and all was fine

good luck,
Rolf
