F1 Rule Changes...

The single one-hour session on a Saturday has been abandoned in favour of
two one-hour sessions - one each on Friday and Saturday. Cars will go out
one at a time for single flying laps.

The new system awards 10 points for a win, and will then go eight, six,
five, four, three, two and one.

Team orders that affect race results have been banned.

The Belgian Grand Prix has been struck off the calendar because of a row
over tobacco advertising.

Tyre companies will be allowed to custom-make tyres for each team they
supply.

Well  done Max and Bernie - a bunch of new rules - none of which guarentee a
better spectacle on Sunday.  Well done indeed.

Sigh, very poor indeed.

...especially custom-made tyres.  Surely that will give teams with the big
bucks an even BIGGER advantage.  I was thinking of going to Spa this year
too :(.

Good for them, but they will never be able to prove anything if it comes up.

This is SO stupid.  This is, for me at least, their premier race.  I see
continued drops in viewage.

And this is not going to last.  The teams fighting over this will get
downright ***y.

Agreed.

About the only thing that will make a huge impact is mandating that Ferarri
must install boat-anchors, and that they be deployed during the race.

Go and watch sports cars racing there... much more fun to watch, more
accessible to the public (often large swathes of the pits are open) and
generally better sounding cars with beastly handling.
Marvellous.

I've been watching APBA Offshore boat racing lately.  This is pretty cool
stuff!

For me, the loss of the race at Spa is incredibly disappointing.  If there was
only one track worth keeping on the schedule, it was Spa.  First, they
emasculate Hockenheim, then they kill Spa.  Well done!  (NOT!)

The loss of spa sucks, but I like the tire rule.  It essentially puts
the teams on the same playing field as Ferrari in that regard, since
the Bridgestones were developed specifically for them.  I don't have
any faith in Williams/McLaren/etc taking advantage of that and making
things more competitive next year, but you never know.

You're right.  Blank canvas projects that have produced complete shite in
the last few years.

Sepang, China, Indy.

Hell - they could even have done something interesting at Hockenheim - but
nope - shite again

If Max and Bernie get their way - it'll 16 Sepangs all in the far east and
the americas

How does changing the points structure help?
All they've done is devalue a F1 racing win.
IMO this will mean there is even less reason to fight for places - why risk
fighting for first place when it is worth almost the same as second?

F1 Rule Changes...

...

This opens up something I've been talking up for several years -- why don't
the F1 teams _design_ their own tires?  We know that F1 teams all spend
huge money on wind tunnel testing but are forced to design their cars to
"match" with the performance of the available tires.  If the car center-of-
gravity (to name just one basic car feature) is in the wrong place for the
tires, that car will never be competitive.  Tire testing facilities are
considerably cheaper than wind tunnels...although tire testing is also an
expensive business.

Note I'm not suggesting they make the tires in-house or even develop the
tread *** compounds--which calls for a *** factory, a chemistry
department and skilled labor.  I'm visualizing tire design information sent
to an existing tire company for construction -- a large number of tire
performance-parameters can be controlled by the internal arrangement of
different types of cord, different types of ***s and fillers, etc.

While this might not make for good racing in the long term, I think that
the first team that brings on a tire-design staff to work in the same
office as their vehicle dynamics staff could have a large advantage.

Maybe, as someone else suggested, Ferrari and Bridgestone have (in effect)
already put these engineers/designers in the same room??

"Doug Milliken"
From what I heard this year(and last?), there was a special team of
Ferrari engineers that worked with the Bridgestone people...everyone else
got stuffed!

Call up some Winston Cup drivers and ask them.  Tony Stewart would be
a great one to ask, right about now.

Personally, I'd to see last place get one point and every position
above that receive an additional point, with 1 point given for leading
a lap and 1 given for leading the most laps.  Would do wonders for
competitiveness, and would certainly ensure that there's never a
boring season.  Imagine a championship coming down to 1 point because
Ralfie didn't stay out and lead a lap at one of the races.
