James.

I used to use this extensively with the likes of Mike Barlow, Alan Orton and
Ross MacGregor. Whilst it worked quite well whilst incar, some people found
that it had some bad effects on GPL. There were some voice degradation and
framerate hit problems. If you have a high bandwidth connection and highly
specified machine, RW works adequately however and is well worth checking
out. Becaus of the problems we experienced, we tended to use it in pitlane
and general chat sessions between actual track action.

You might be interested in downloading Fire Talk. This is a program based
loosely on the same principle, but is far superior in sound quality and much
less fiddly to set up. The only problem with  is that it has largely been a
failure in terms of in car transmissions. There is however, a growing number
of drivers who meet up in chatrooms to chew the fat. It's pretty cool to be
able to put voices to all those familiar names we see on VROC.

I'm in a league that requires it, and it works quite well.  I first thought it
was silly, but the league looked very good and the administrator insisted
that it made everything more personal and friendly.  Turns out he was
100% right.  I now know most of the guys by the sound of their voice,
and it does seem as if I know them better.  Anyway, we have 17 members
who all use Roger.  I have a 33.6 dialup tweeked for VROC and it works
great as long as everyone doesn't try to talk at once.  It's not much good
in-car though, as you can't hear it over the engine.  We don't use it
during the race because it's distracting, but it sure comes in handy in
case of disconnects.  Usually if you're booted from GPL, you're still
connected to Roger.
