Probably right. I set up the local server using "overcast" instead
of dry, and that seems to give some very impressive lighting
conditions.

Andrew McP... off to bed ;-)

1:04 so far. Best I've heard of at RSC is a 1:02, which sounds about right.
Don't shift more than you have to. 3rd gear is fine for some of those slower
corners. 4th through T1.

Sounds about right - I'm at pretty consistent 1:03's with some setup
tweaking, at least when the tires are in good shape.  A 1:02 would be a very
good lap.  It took some more tweaking to figure out what to do to get decent
framerates with this sucker, too - the auto settings had it running like a
slideshow.  Had to bail from the incar entirely and tweak the bumper cam to
get a centrally-located view since the***pit view takes the framerate
below a stable level.  Same with RBR, which is even worse - I suppose the
DX9 graphics are nicer in these new games, but I don't see enough payoff to
justify the huge performance hit.  You either have to turn off all the eye
candy and lower the rez to the point that they look worse than older games,
or drop $300 on a video card so they can look marginally better.

RFactor is very graphically demanding, even compared to GTR(demo); here are
some FRAPS numbers I took from doing a solo lap in the***pit and then one
from the bumper cam.  30FPS worse than GTR incar, and about 50 from the
bumper view - even running at lower resolution!  I can run GTR at 12X9 with
2XAA/2XAniso acceptably well, even with nine*** AI - but not this new
baby...

1:03.XXX here also with a little setup tweaking. Can only race by myself
though, keep losing connection when racing on other people's servers. Damn
56k!!

like:

Actually there is a (limited) dynamic lighting change.

BTW, is there any way to turn clutch help on/off? Or remove the wheel
from the***pit?

Yes, it's F11 or F10 I think, as well as the setup menu somewhere.
Not sure about the wheel.

You wren't seeing things. :-)
The full game will have a full 24 hours of changing lighting conditions. The
demo does though have something like 8 or 12 hours. You can accelerate the
changes so it happens quickly during a race, and it does look very, very,
impressive. There is still a number of graphic/lighting features left out of
the demo so the full game will look even better.

Yes, I'm not thrilled with the frame rate either on my P4 3.0 9700Pro. It's
the same whether I use***pit, hood, or bumper. Stays about 40-45 on high
settings with 2x AA. That's fine, but I'd like it a lot higher. I'm
sensitive to frame rates and get nauseous easily. :-p This isn't the final
product, so maybe they will find some fps in the final release.

Is this with the various aids/assistance turned on or off? The first thing
I do in any game or sim is turn off all the
traction/steering/braking/whatever assistance. With a game like this
though I'm not sure which settings can realistically be left engaged.

Lol! Thanks for the reassurance :-) It's the kind of feature I would never
have thought worth bothering with in a sim, but there are moments going
round the track when the lighting looks *so* realistic it's amazing.

PS While "talking" to you, after noting your comments in the political
threads I think you'd appreciate the BBC documentaries I linked to
elsewhere, http://***.hopto.org:6969/index.html?search=nightmare
Now I've seen all three I'm even more convinced that -- while
very contentious in some ways -- they're an important contribution to the
ongoing political debate none of us can afford to ignore.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who's puke-prone!  That's my first litmus
test for a sim, actually - when my eyes see stuff on the screen that my head
disagrees with, my stomach lets me know instantly!  Same as riding in the
car with my sis driving... ;-)

Can't answer for Aaron, but you can definitely do 1:03's with everything
off; all I run is auto clutch since I don't have an analog pedal or lever to
devote to it.  You do have a limited window when the tires are at optimum
grip; they start off slippery for a lap or two, hit their optimum for a few
laps and then gradually go off.  Plus fuel matters; you can do them with 10
laps worth for instance, but a heavier fuel load will no doubt put a few
tenths on your laptimes.

I do not use any aids what so ever except auto clutch. Never have, never
will!

I was really suprised while driving how the shadows crept into my braking
zone hiding my brake point as the day progressed.  I wouldnt have thought
this would add much to a race sim but I was wrong, the immersion it brings
is amazing and were only getting 8-5 time frame.
