It says the application needs 256 mb of free space. I have 25 Gb of free
space... completly laughable.

Win 98 had a bug in the installer that reports incorrect disk mem available
on partitions over 2 gig ( or something like that ) and hence gives a
warning message.
Ignoring the message and continuing the install usually results in a good
install.

By the way, the game runs a lot smoother in Win98 than in WinXP (same as all
my racing games); not to mention that my TSW doesn't seem to work as well in
XP.

It's funny but I get just the opposite results.
I have a dual boot XP/98 system only because I heard all the horror stories
about games being troublesome under XP.
It's been about a year now and I still have nothing on the W98 partition.

I think that the bug appears when you are using fat 32 and are trying to
install something that requires more then 2 gig of disk space.
This from the Baldur's Gate FAQ at Intreplay;
Q: Doing a custom install the game is only seeing 2047MB. How am I supposed
to install everything?
A: With FAT32 came the ability to format a hard drive larger than 2048MB. If
you have a partition that is formatted larger than 2048MB the game will
still unfortunately only think you have 2047MB free. You should still be
able to install everything (as long as you are sure you have enough hard
disk space). When the warning appears about insufficient space it will ask
you if you want to continue. Simply select "YES" and the installer should
continue.

I believe a full install is 6 GB? Been a long time since I played it,
got tired of running ***ing errands for people.
Jason
This was available as an option if you wanted to install all 4 cd's to avoid
swapping.
Also you could get it down to about 1.8G by tinkering with the config file
and getting rid of some redundant files that are on all disks.

PS With all the mods and tracks available ( and courses for golf sims ) I
have 3 different installs that are just crossing 3G each. (PGA 2000, Tiger
Woods 2002, Links 2003)
And to think I can remember when my first hard drive ( for the original IBM
PC) had a whopping total of 5 whole megabytes.
It was so big it had to be an external drive. ;o)
