GPL doesn't run either

Greetings,

Well, GPL arrived today and after installing the game fails
the same way as the demo. I will try it on my work machine
tomorrow to make sure.

I used Uninstaller to remove the demo before the install.
The system installs with no errors except not installing
older versions of DirectX and Movie Player.

I tried both Software and 3dfx modes but not Rendition.

The failure is that I get the Sierra splash screen then it drops
back to the desktop. I don't get any sounds.

I reset the BIOS per:
 http://www.racesimcentral.net/
with no effect (Vram and Vbios were enabled).

Video mode 640x480x16b has no effect.

To recap, my system is:
P3-600B (133Mhz), not O/C
Abit BE6-II (latest BIOS)
256Mb (133 Mhz)
40Gb Quantum
Creative AWE 64 (latest driver), ISA
Graphics Blaster RIVA TNT (latest driver), PCI
Linksys 10/100 Ethernet
RS Shifter (USB)
Win 98 SE
DirectX7A

What next?

The consensus seemed to be that the vid card might be the
problem. What would be a reasonably priced AGP card that
will also run NFS:PU, SCGT, F1 2000, & CMR?

Have youe tried the GPL patches from www.papy.com ?

You probably want to try the GPL 1.2 patch and either the OpenGL or the D3D
patch - depending on which one gives you the best result.

In addition to running GPL on a Banshee/400PII/320MB/W98SE, I've got a
TNT2/550PIII/128MB/W98SE which works with GPL quite well.

I wouldn't say that your video card is the problem just yet, unless there is
a known issue with your specific card.

Cheers
Hamish

try to set desktop to 16bit 640x480, and start gpl.
If that work, the problem is your display drivers (fail to change
resolution)

Since you have a Riva TNT card, you will need to get the Direct3D rasterizer
and use that, rather than 3dfx.

I can't remember where you can download this from, but it's on the GPL
beginner sites, I think.

You can download the D3D7 rasterizer from

http://www.papy.com/downloads/gpl_d3d.exe

Thanks to all for the suggestions. Unfortunately, it still does not
work.

I installed the game onto my 'old' machine:
P200 w/256Mb
Matrox Millenium II
ESS Solo (SB16 clone)
Linksys 10/100 Ethernet
BCM clone Motherboard

It ran fine on this machine. I then swapped in the video and
sound cards between machines. The problem remains on
the new machine but the game plays on the old on in all
configurations and Video modes.

I have disabled all cache settings and everything else I can think
of (except UDMA-66 since my HD runs on that).

???
1) Are there any known problems with the Abit BE6-II (not 2.0)?

2) Is it time to upgrade even though the machine is perfect for
everything else I use (for now)?

3) Which Mobo & CPU combo has the least compatibility issues?

Any input is appreciated.
