A little Geforce/NR2002 tip

After much playing around I think I have kinda figured it something.

First: the Ansi Filtering value in the rend_###.ini is how many levels your
card is capable of, not if its on or not.

Second: Just because a GF3 is capable of level 3 Ansi-Filtering should it?
IMO no Level 1 is best. So edit your rend_###.ini file to read 2. I found
this got rid of the blurryness in my case, but had better quality than not
running it at all.

Third: If you have used a program like NVmax to turn on Ansi-Filtering turn
it back off. It seems to help my frame rates so I can only guess that its
double dipping on the Ansi-Filtering.

Fourth: Don't over look your video drivers as a possible source of your
sound problems. I had different sound problems with the 21.81, 21.88, 27.20,
and the 27.42s seemed to cure all but the snap crackle pop Papy games are
famous for.

I'm sure there will be someone that disagrees with me, but from myplaying
around with these setting I now have NR2002 running better FPS than N4 and
looking better as well. So try them out and see if it helps you out, they
did for me.

Good Luck I hope it helps

In what?  OGL or D3D.....can you share your video card settings, any N2K2
ini file changes made (other than mentioned) and system BIOS settings with
us?  "Better FPS".....by what number?  Where did you test the FPS (at
Atlanta "test session" pits...as we all tried to do in N4...as a "base FPS
test" that was consistent), what "game graphics" settings did you have set?
How is the "quality" better...in what way?

I know you were trying to be helpful with your post....but it was not very
helpful really...without this information.

Well the info about the Ansi-Filtering value was for both D3D and OpenGL
hence the ###, I'm using OpenGL myself since the jaggies are so much worse
in D3D, also this what I was using in N4. As far as BIOS settings go I can't
tell you because I'm at work now, but again no changes from N4 so its pretty
much a non-issue. No other NR2002 ini file changes. As far in game settings
go they match up between the 2 titles as well with the exception of the
Asni-Filtering box, which was the whole point of the post. I'd have to
double check but I'm 99% sure on these. Car Detail high, World Detail med,
Draw Ahead 83%, cars ahead 33, cars behind 6 (this is the part I'm not sure
of), All graphics options on. There is one differance between the two games
here 2002 has Ansi-Filtering were N4 has specular highlights. As for my FPS
"test" no I didn't do the in the pits test because IMO that is a pretty lame
test. Yes I know there isn't a real good way for everyone to get an
comparable benchmark, but I wanted to see the FPS were it mattered, on the
track not in the pits. (Hey Papy how about a little benchmarking routine for
NR2003? I know I'd use that way more than adding ***to replays). Where I
got my frame rates was starting at the back of the pack at Daytona (hey it
was the 500 this weekend afterall) and checking them when it went green. As
far as how many fps I gained it wasn't alot only about 5 fps, but thats
better than losing right? As far as the quality being better I would say
that has came from the improvments to the game made by Papy, other than the
blurryness caused by the level 3 Ansi-Filtering.

Your right I was trying to be helpful by showing some of the stuff I
"figured" out over the weekend without giving every last little tid bit
becasue as you well know every system reacts alittle different. I didn't
want to say "Here is a way to gain 5fps" and have people saying "I only got
3 you mofo". Anything to do with quality is subjective so I was also trying
to avoid the "that looks like crap" stuff as well. All I was trying to do
was clear up a little bit of the mystery around Ansi-Filtering, beacuse
there is a lot of confussion flying around about it. As well as give
soomeone with the ambition to play around something else to try. I personly
think that is a very good addition to NR2002 and it has been getting a bad
rap in alot of posts for killing frame rates. I have used it N4 thru the use
of Tweak programs such as NVmax all along, and I hope more titles pick up on
it.

Complete system specs

ASUS A7M266 mobo 1005 BIOS (AMD 1.3 driver pack)

Philips Accoustic Edge sound card. Original drivers from the CD
Linksys network card Original Drivers from the CD

Oh yeah I run the game at 1280x960 since thats my monitors max. I also use
2xFSAA enabled thru NVmax

MadDAWG, what brand of Geforce do you have (ASUS) and what product?  Seems
you are having good results, and SO am I with my Hercules GF2 MX (relatively
anyway )  could you share the brand and product.

I know for a fact mfg's use different parts to make a geforce3 mx card and
some allow more tolerance in chips which means more OR less likely to
overclock, display sharpness issues and what not...  It is not like they buy
these cards and stick their own box...  they buy the main chips and spec out
the supporting chips according to NVIDIA's guidelines, and assemble em.  or
have them assembled for them (in some cases).

Funny, I understood exactly what he was talking about and knew  where to
go to test the changes.
