I got Nascar 2 as a Christmas gift. One of the favorite things about
Nascar 1 was that I could enter myself and not have to drive another's car.
I liked seeing my name in "lights". However, I haven't been able to find
anything about it in the book nor have I been able to successfully figure
out how to do it. I have made myself as a new driver but each time I head
to the track, I'm in Jeff Gordon's car. Help!
Make sure you're at the top of the driver's list for that season.

Did you go to info or bio in the Driver Info menu? One of these two is
where you change your name (T Player). It is at the Bottom left of the
screen - under where the picture would go.
