It breaks down as $299 - $30 Instant Rebate - $40 Mail-In Rebate.

If you were considering a Ti4200, or if you want near Ti4600 speeds for a
lot less money than the Ti4600 then I think this is a great buy.

I just picked one up.  Quick comments to follow after some basic testing...

I have that card, it's really really nice using the default driverset.

If you have any luck getting Detonators newer than 27.42 working with
it let me know.  I've done a fresh install of Win98 twice now and
tried using multiple sets of newer certified drivers and it's
ridiculously unstable.

Quick Comparison time.  Not Toms Hardware Quality, but it'll do, it'll do :)

GeForce 3 Ti500 3D Mark 2001se Score - 7474.

GeForce 4 Ti4400 3D Mark 2001se Score - 9144.

Yowsa :)

Is it worth it to replace a Ti500 with a Ti4400?

Hell, I don't know, but it's faster, the 2D quality of the GF4 is visibly
better than the GF3, and it has 128MB of RAM.  For $229, it'll hold me until
2003 when the next round of cards come out :)

Once I sell the Ti500, the investment will be minimal.

Oh, and the GF4 is one big honkin' board!

I use 29.42's as released by nVidia.

No problems under WinXP.

6 months from now it will be $100
So you have to decide if its worth
throwing away $199 in 6 months.

Is this such a great deal?  I just don't see it that way.  I'm still
waiting for a game that really requires more than my voodoo3 and that I
really want to play.  Plus the nextgen cards are almost here.  Also the
Radeon 8500 is now pretty clearly the price/perf leader at $99, less than
half the cost of that (discounted from an inflated price) 4400.

This is always true of course, but the original poster upgraded from a
GF3, so the difference was incremental at best.

Try Elder Scrolls III Morrowind.  (If you want to challenge your Voodoo 3).

And my car depreciates like a mad man.  What's your point?

If I want to invest money, I'll check in with Fidelity.

Whether it is a deal or not is up to you and your situation.

The next gen cards are NOT almost here.  The new nVidia's are to be released
no earlier than year-end, and there are rumors now that they are delayed
until 2003 sometime.

I needed certain things (sharper 2D, 128MB RAM, etc...) and frankly this car
eats the Radeon alive.

Oh, and my luck...

My board is defective.  It is suffering from the nVidia "Dots 'o' Death",
which usually resolves to a bad memory chip :(

I'll be stoppying by CompUSAto exchange it this afternoon :(

You know, I've only had about 4 computer components fail on me in the last
22 years, and two of them have been nVidia boards :)  My Creative GeForce
DDR died with the "Dots 'o' Death", just like this one.  I had that one
fixed under warranty which took about 2 weeks.  It was a bad memory chip.

And no, I don't overclock my boards (I just knew someone would bring that
up, so I'm heading it off at the pass :)).

Everything's fine now.  Stopped by CompUSA, got another new board, and it's
working perfectly.

There must have been something really funky with the first one.  When I
installed the replacement, and identical board, WinXP detected it as a new
device.  I didn't expect that, unless WinXP is looking further than the
hardware descriptor string these days.

I can't get over how much the 2D is improved in the GF4 over the GF3.  It's
easily up to ATI 2D Quality now.  For the first time, I can run 1600X1200 in
crystal clear clarity without a hint of fuzziness.

I like!

I'm not familiar with that term.  What do you mean by "Dots 'o' Death"?
I expect to be getting a new card soon and want to know what to look
for.
