OT: F1 race this weekend - Nurburgring!

For those who don't know or forgot :) , this weekend the F1 season races
at Nurburgring.  I am a recent (this season) fan of F1 and have been
reading up big-time on "The 'Ring".  I can't WAIT to see this track raced
by F1 cars.  I knew this track is used by car companies (like Porsche and
Ferrari) to test their cars, but have read that this track is VERY tricky
and dangerous.  I've seen some pics on the WWW of some of the "famous"
corners and it looks quite challenging, to put it mildly.

Anyway, enough of my ranting...

Gentlemen, start your engines! (or is that for NASCAR?)

Ciao!

   - Tom N.

If you're expecting the old Nordschliefe then you're in for a
disappointment.  The current "Ring" that F1 runs is not the 14 mile one of
old.

The track they use now, is a about 3 long straights with a couple
of chicanes and a small tight section near the grandstands..thats about
it ....

Ummmm, sorry to give you the bad news, Tom, but the current 'Ring is NOT
that used back in the olden days.
The last F1 race on the Nordschliefe was in the mid 1970's.

He he, the Ring you're referring to (Nordschleife) is not the track
the current F1 uses...

Get GPL to test the real Ring yourself...

1976 if I remember correctly, the year in which Lauda had his accident
on the Ring.

Anecdotary (nothing like starting a post with a word you just
made up), a friend called me last Sunday to ask if I'd come to
the 'Ring with her this weekend.  I said I really wasn't sure
why, but that I had mentally crossed off all May weekends for
Ring visits.

A classic case of differently aligned interests in geographically
closely related tracks.  Although I follow F1 casually, I had no
idea the GP was this weekend.  As for my friend, where-ever in
the world F1 races is _the_ place to be, regardless of any real
race tracks being in the vicinity.

Needless to say, I declined to go.  I don't see the point of
travelling to the Ring on a day it's closed.  My response was
greeted by cold silence.  Ohh, the non-understanding...

-Laurens de Jong, The Netherlands.

P.S. Oh, this was the same Volvo-driving friend I mentioned
earlier.

Have you checked out if it's open ?

Lots of times when there's action on the GP circuit, the old section is
open to the public....

Nope, you're thinking of Hockenheim, where the German Grand Prix is held.
This is the European GP.  Of course, he's still not going to see the track
he's wants to.........

I think they tend to use hatzenbach as a caravan park when F1 comes to
visit!
