CMR2 freezes after few seconds - HELP!

I have recently purchased CMR2.0. Full or "Medium" Installation was no
problem. I kept the default setting. I entered a profile. I tried an Arcade
race on "Italy". The screen froze after 10 seconds.

My machine has the following:

Windows 98SE
AMD K6 500 3D Now
128 RAM
8 GB available/12 total GB
3dfx Voodoo3 2000
DirectX 8.01

Any advice would be appreciated. TIA

PS: Should I reinstall DirectX 7.0 as per game instructions?

From what I've heard, CMR2 doesn't like the most recent (1.07?) Voodoo3
drivers. They want you to uninstall the new drivers and install the old
ones. The demo froze on my Voodoo3 PC as well, I haven't tried the full
version.

This problem alone decided me against buying CMR2. I'm not going back to
old, slow drivers just to make one game work, when all other games I've
tried work fine.
