Voodoo3 3000 problems

by Ilkka Haapavirt » Wed, 16 Feb 2000 04:00:00

I had the same problem with PII 300 and voodoo3 3000 PCI card.

The cure was in Control Panel / Display / 3dfx Tweaks.
There is an option to reduce some memory setting to 2M (don't remember
which).
Make sure to be in the selections for OpenGL.

I can run now 1280x with all details and detail level at ca. 50%.
The frame rate is 36 fps alone and ca. 15-20 fps with many AI cars.
With a PII/300 with 96M of RAM!

I don't have the 1.2 patch and I haven't removed the glide2x.dll file.

Sounds odd - where did the Glide v2.53 file come from - it's way out of
date.  You should definately be running Glide, not OpenGL.  Plus you don't
have to limit to 2Mb as Ilkka suggests.  I'd check the 3DFX drivers again.

Cheers,

Steve.

Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a try tonight. Just to make sure:
you put the memory setting ON?
Oh, and one advice from me: install the 1.2 patch! Get it at
www.papy.com.

Voodoo3 3000 problems

My friend called me after he installed GPL, and he wondered why GPL
looked so much better on my pc. That was because I have all those
addons installed, with better graphics etc. So i copied my gpl
directory over his GPL directory so he would have the same addons as
me. I have VoodooII SLI, and still have glide 2.53 in my gpl dir, it
works great, and I had problems with newer glide versions.

But now you say that I don't have to limit to 2mb. Hmm..
I have the latest drivers (from 3dfx.com, release date 27 jan),
reinstalled them again, didn't help.

What drivers are you using?

Voodoo3 3000 problems

Hi Andre,

I had the same problem after a complete make over on my PC. I fixed it by
putting on the latest 3dfx drivers (all 6.5 Mb of them!) & then using the
cure for all ails - the program called GLSetup.exe found hidden away on the
Quake 3 CD. After that it was all happy jolly smiley GPL joy.

Cheers,
Colin

I remember I had some problems with Sierra's Homeworld, it wouldn't
run in 3dfx with my voodoo2 card. I also had to use the GLSetup.exe to
fix these problems. I'll try this on my friends pc, see if that will
solve the problems.

Thanks Colin!

I'm confused now - have you got VoodooII SLI, or Voodoo3 3000?  Either way
Glide2.53 is not the correct version of Glide to be using.  And, after
having both those Voodoo configurations myself, you shouldn't need to
limit to 2Mb - I never have.

Cheers,

Steve.

Voodoo3 3000 problems

I don't know if you have already come across a solution for your
problem ( I haven't looked at this ng for a few days now, too busy...
work, work...) but this is typical of the a incorrect version of
Glide2x.dll for your current vid card. For the V3 3000 Agp the best
glide to use is the 2.61, the 2.60 is also good but the latter
slightly more stable under heavy load.
Have a look into you windows\system folder and see what version you
have. In any case I have sent you the 2.61 glide and that works for
sure. I have another 2 pc's, one with a V1, another with 2 V2 SLI  and
another with a V3. For the V2 the best glide I found is actually the
2.53 as you rightly said, and I am still using it on my other pc.
You may also try these settings in your registry key
Local_machine\software\3dfx interactive\glide\voodoo3\glide for better
performance. Just backup this key from your registry before you make
any changes so you can return to the original state in case your
machine isn't happy with the setup.
Also note that the SST_GRXCLK is set to 175 mhz as my V3 is
overclocked. You can simply omit this line and the V3 will be left to
its original speed.
Copy and paste the text below into notepad and save the file with a
.reg extension, then right click on it and click merge. Reboot your
pc, start GPL and you should have better performance on all glide
games!
These settings are for the V3 only!

"SST_FT_CLK_DEL"=dword:00000004
"SST_TF0_CLK_DEL"=dword:00000006
"SST_TF1_CLK_DEL"=dword:00000006
"SST_VIN_CLKDEL"=dword:00000001
"SST_VOUT_CLKDEL"=dword:00000000
"SSTH3_GGAMMA"="1.55"
"SST_GRXCLK"=dword:000000af
"FX_GLIDE_ALLOC_COLOR"=dword:00000002
"FX_GLIDE_LOD_DITHER"=dword:00000001
"SSTH3_REFRESH_1280x1024"=dword:00000055
"SSTH3_FASTPCIRD"=dword:00000001
"SSTH3_FASTMEM"=dword:00000001
"SST_SCREENREFRESH"=dword:00000055
"SSTH3_RGAMMA"="1.55"
"SSTH3_BGAMMA"="1.55"
"SSTH3_REFRESH_1024x768"=dword:00000064

If you're not sure about this you can get V3 utilities that will do
this for you.

Cheers.

Mauricio.

Voodoo3 3000 problems

Thanks for all the tips and mailing me the glide file Mauricio, but
simply setting the 'limit size to 2mb' option fixed all the problems.
GPL runs beautiful now!

Andre
