GP3 to GP4

by Mik » Wed, 17 Dec 2003 16:46:59

Hi all
I have been away from sims for awhile. I started playing GP2 again &
like it so got GP3. I liked that too & saw GP4 on ebay cheap.
Put it on tonight & was disappointed by the sluggish behavior. I let
it do the auto graphics. That pretty much wiped out all trackside
objects.
I am running a 2GB P4 with 256MB mem & a Riva TNT 64 card (32mb mem )
I thought this would be enough but...............
Any tips?
Before anyone starts with junk it please realize I like GP I think
that I can be fine with GP3 but wanted to know what I could do to try
& make GP4 run better.
Is the TNT 64 card too slow? I have been thinking of getting a Radeon
9600 with theh 128mb of mem. Would that allow GP4 to move? Or is my
2GB CPU already a limiting factor for this sim?
Thanks for any help you may give.

That card was too slow when it was released about 5 years ago.

Video card issues aside, iirc you need to turn off Anti-aliasing. Besides
which, you're better off with GP3 AND GP3-2000 add-on in comparison to GP4.

Thanks what is iirc? As for anti alias I thought that letting the sim
self pic which gave a low 14 fps was as good as it got?
Like I said I dont mind GP3 & it looks fine. I have heard of this 2000
add-on but not found it.
Where do I get/buy it?
Thanks for your help.

I've got a patched back-up of GP3 2000 if you want it - drop me an email
with your details.

No offence, but if you want to play any game these days with decent
graphics, you have to be prepared to spend more than $100.

That's with F1C. GP4 had no performance hit with FSAA on my Radeon, but
then, FSAA is much better on Radeon than Nvidia

GP4.

If you're one of those purists that wants physics above all else... as an
overall package, GP4 is much better. Eye candy just adds so much to the
game's atmosphere.

CPU is fine.  Your videocard is a huge bottleneck.

I'd recommend getting a Geforce 4 Ti4400/4600 as they're cheap now and
will run any current game fine.

This is an interesting topic. I need a newer card as well since my Voodoo5
doesn't support N2003, F1-C, or NT2004.
I was always wondering what would be next in line to choose from because I
can't afford an ATI Radeon 9800 or 9700 vid card.
I'm beginning to think that FSAA is not as important as frame rates...so now
I'm just looking for good fps and compatibility with newer titles at a
reasonable price.

Interesting...I had been away for awhile So had thought a Radeon 9600
just by seeing what was popular on Ebay.
But the Geforce 4 has 128mb also at half the price. Is it pretty close
in performance?
Thanks

Anandtech did a review of the Radeon 9600 Pro.  It is sandwiched,
performance wise, in between the Geforce 4 Ti4200/Geforce FX 5600 and
the Radeon 9500 Pro.  The Geforce 4 Ti4600 is still faster in their
benchmarks.
