ICR2: car set and null modem race

by Wolfgang Prei » Tue, 10 Jun 1997 04:00:00

Hi all,

Actually, I might as well send this message as e-mail to Michael
Carver, but maybe a lurker or two in the group can benefit from the
answers too.

My question simply is: how can I edit an ICR2 carset to work with two
human players without messing up the order of the cars or excluding
top drivers?

I'm playing ICR2 with the latest version of the PPG97 car set c/o M.
Carver et al. My problem now is as follows: I'm usually playing
against my brother using a null modem cable. The driver at the machine
that is hosting the game gets the "Grateful Dead" car, as he would in
solo play. The other driver, however, is seated in Greg Moore's car.
Although I like driving this beautiful blue car, I'd prefer to *race*
Moore rather than impersonate him (especially since I'm not really
good at impersonating a top driver - I'm considering changing my
nickname to "Hiro II"... ;)

Now I thought that problem could be mended easily by creating a second
"generic" driver in the drivers2.txt. I did that, and sure enough,
Moore was now part of the competition. The problem now is that Moore
is driving Carpentier's car, Carpentier sits in Gugelmin's car, and so
on. Apparently, the cars in the .dat file are read in a fixed order.

As a workaround, I exchanged Moore and "Arnd Meier", so that I'm
driving Moore's car, and he's driving Meier's. What I want is having
both human drivers and all the important AI drivers in their proper
cars in a modem game. But how? (BTW, I'm familiar with the pack/unpack
utility for .dat files. If I knew what files to rename in PPG97.dat,
it would already help a lot.)

Thanks for reading.

Rearrange the order of the cars in the actually dat file using the
paintkit program.  Try "swapping" the Moore car for one of the "extras"
in the carset (Richard Montgomery or Charles Hammock).  The hosting
driver gets the "player" (not Player's) car and the "calling" driver
gets the "last" car in the Paintkit program.  Then swap the information
for these drivers in the drivers2.txt file.  Now you should be able to
have two human drivers and all of the "real" CART drivers.

Since you "bought" your ride should be quite alright to change your name
to Hiro II ;-)

Thanks, this worked. I didn't consider using the paintkit before,
since my own car designs never even come close to the marvellous stuff
I can get from the net. The order of the cars in the .dat file is not
really intuitive, is it? First driver gets first car, second driver
gets last car, third driver gets second car....

I'm driving Meier's car now. There are plenty of similarities here,
too: we're both German and slow. ;)
