race.

Yeah, they woulda' loved it too. Looked just like a restrictor plate race.

Not that I didn't enjoy it, but there is just something contrived about it
that doesn't sit quite right with me.

Just how long is Newman-Haas going to put up with Fittipaldi's bonehead
mistakes?

What do you think of as "racing" then?  To me the last few laps of this race
are what racing is all about.  It's too bad we dont see more close racing
like this in F1.  like that famous dual between Gilles Villenuve and the
other guy way back when :-)  That was basically like the end of the Michigan
race :-)

Ok, I see your point.  Nevertheless, I found it fairly exciting.  It's more
fun not knowing who is going to win until the last second (literally
sometimes), than knowing who's going to win for most of the race (like F1).

Yea.. one guy totally dominating is SO interesting! "Gee willigers!
that way I wont even need to watch the race! yippee!"

I thought the last few laps was one of the most exciting races I've
seen... ever. Open wheel cars banging off the final corner now that's
exciting. A real shame when backmarkers decide the victory though.. I
always hate that...

... and a shame Montoya won too, I always hate him ;)

Great racing is when you have two cars that are passing and repassing and
going side-by-side becuase the cars are engineered equally well or the
drivers are equally skilled, or a combination of both.  That's what Arnoux
and Villeneuve looked like to me.  "Eenie-meenie-miney-moe" racing is when
they keep passing eachother mainly becuase of a draft.  I think it's sorta
silly when leading the race becomes a bad thing.  A little drafting is sorta
cool, but I'm afraid the Hanford device is emphasizing it a bit too much.

I didn't say one guy dominating the whole race is actually entertaining, I
just think it's more honest than the sort of contrived racing that happens
with the Hanford device.  At least when one guy dominates, you can say,
"wow, he really deserved to win!"  Instead of "oh whoopie, he sure was lucky
he happened to be in front when the checkered flag dropped."  BTW it was
indeed pretty cool when they banged wheels.

My thought exactly as I was watching the race. The most exciting
finish battle since Villeneuve and Arnoux in 79. I was pointed out
that luckily Montoya and Andretti didn't bang wheels though....

Now, to bring this back on topic. D. Kaemmer, pretty please with sugar on
top, can you make a simulator so we can do just what we saw yesterday :)

It was beautiful to watch because the drivers were so professional (I
think it was more than luck that they didn't take each other out) and the
strategy was so interesting. Throw in the variable of the slow car and you
have all the elements of exciting racing (perhaps not quite as good a
Villeneuve/Arnoux/'79 :).

Same thing basically happened in the Nascar race.  It was decided on the last
lap...

I *still* think they touched wheels.  You're right - it was luck...
Great race, though!
