My Sim: GPL track starting positions?

by J. Perki » Thu, 01 Jul 2004 05:21:43

The wife and kids are out of town this week, so I'm dusting off my old
driving sim, the one I work on a couple of times a year. ;) Using the
P.A. Flack's file format guides I have been able to load up some GPL
tracks. However, I haven't been able to figure out where they store
the starting grid and/or pit lane positions. Has anyone cracked this
code? Can you give me a clue? Ruud or someone must have come across
this before.

FWIW, I've written a fairly generic car/track conversion tool, which I
plan to release with all of the source code once I get this bit
cracked. Hopefully, people with more time/energy than me can use it to
get a jumpstart on creating their own sims.

Thanks for help,
Jason

Well, I only edited this to change the start position for a hotlap at
Spa and the Ring, so that I wouldn't have to do a whole warm-up lap
beforehand. That involved changing the 'pit stall' value in track.ini,
from 100 to 5800 for instance, so you'd be 5700 meters further up the track.
Didn't change the grid though.

Sounds good. Conversion from what to what, though?

At the moment, I can read RACER cars and GPL tracks (mostly). I'd like
to add some other formats like F1C if I can ever get specs on the
files. The files are loaded into a generic list of associative arrays,
and then a plugin writes them out to some other format. The idea is,
if you're some hack like me working on your own sim, and you want to
get some content, you can just write a plugin instead of trying to
write another GPL-to-XXX converter. You only have to know what format
you are trying to write, you don't have understand 3DOs.

Like I said, I haven't posted it yet, but if anyone wants it drop me
an email and I'll send it to you.

Thanks for the info on GPL. I was so buried in the 3DOs that I forgot
about the .ini files. Doh! Still, I'm going to have to figure out how
to convert these to XYZ. Thanks again!
