F1GP lap times! How do they do it?

As a start, always use Q's.

A lot of time can be wasted in the Bus Stop chicanes if not taken
with enormous risk.

No, that doesn't make a difference.

You are probably being too gentle to your car. Try braking later and
'throw' the car into the corner, and get earlier on the gas again. Lots
of rear brake balance should help you with this.
But this is just one hint, there are a lot of little tricks that make up
a lot of time, like gearing up/down at specific moments, wheelspinning
through chicanes with help over oversteer, etc. Lot of practise needed.

Other hints:
- use GPLap v5, so you see split times and you always have 716 hp.
- use GPPerf v2, and compare your perf files with the top drivers.
- read Ivanhoe Vasiljevich's driving guides, and look at his replays.

You can find lots of stuff at the PC F1GP Homepage at
http://www.racesimcentral.net/~dgymer/home

Hope this helps.

F1GP lap times! How do they do it?

by Bruno Schleic » Thu, 31 Aug 1995 04:00:00

I've been playing this game since it came out on the Amiga a few
years back (6?) and now I've been replaying it all on my PC, and
was feeling quite happy with myself as I know most of the
circuits off by heart and can usually beat the best lap times
during qualifying with C or D tires, easier still with Q.
However when I came upon the Best Ever Lap Times on the Net,
I've been trying to reproduce them, using same settings sometimes
but can never get closer than 2 or 3s of the best times.
I mean for instance, at SPA the best time is just under 1.40.00
and my best ever lap is 1.44.589.
Could this be because I play in the Semi-pro level (I hate other
cars crashing into me or pushing me off the track just because
i'm on their racing line!).
I am usually on the limits of breaking and know the max speed at
which I can go around a corner, and just cannot see how another
4s can be taken out of a lap time.
I am well impressed with those times, and I know they must be
true, so what am I doing wrong?!

 yours hopelessly, Bruno Schleich

Make that http://www.mal.com/~dgymer/home.html and then it
will work. :-)

I had the same problem as did a friend of mine.

I used to get 1m 15 secs on Pheonix on my Amiga version a while back, I thought it was very fast, my friend was
lucky to get 1:16's.

Then I saw the fastest times and they blew mine away.

BUT these guys have got the F1GP utilities so you can speed up frame rate etc.
this makes a BIG difference to the times.

Today I played Amiga F1GP with the utilities on an A1200 and I broke at least 50 % of the top times.
(My friend broke 1)
But before this my friend got 1 m 14 on Pheonix. (So I would be able to get 1m 13)
That would be almost ***y impossible without the patches, plus we used the same setups as the top net people.

Hope that clears up your problem, they had superior equipment, ala Skoda V's Williams.

The fact that AI (artificial intelligence) cars are crashing into
you at Pro-level should give you a clue: you should be a lot
faster. Before I started competing the guys in the WCPCHOF I was
already able to run circles around the AI cars and I still get
beaten by a second or more (SPA: 1.41.549).

It can be done though, check their replays and PRF-files.

Get GPLAP and GPPERF from the F1GP WC PC Home Page and compare
your efforts with the best entries. That should teach you a lot.
Have fun!

You are right that the utilities help a bit (key/button buffering, hp
fix, 2 key gearing), but the frame rate may not be set higher than 10 fps
as it gives too much advantage.

Your PC's speed makes a *big* difference too... I just tried F1GP on a P90,
and my lap times dropped a couple of seconds compared to my old 386DX25.

There are two reasons for that. First, it's easier to drive with a higher
frame rate. Second, a higher frame rate gives you physical advantage, the
car seems to accelerate better out of corners (try doing the Peralta in
Mexico with different frame rates and notice the difference).
I used to play with 18.7 fps on a 386dx/40 but when I changed this to 25 fps
my laptimes were at least .5s faster, and I didn't push harder.
That is why the Grant Reeve's framerate patch on the Amiga is limited for
the hall of fame, namely 10 fps, else people with fast Amiga's blow away
the times made with low fps.

The users inputs are scanned once per frame, just before all the calculations
take place. higher fps=better response.

bye!
