Thrustmaster Wheel and XP?

by meettonysopra » Fri, 30 Nov 2001 05:41:58

I've got the dreaded Thrustmaster FF Ferrari Racing Wheel and have
upgraded to Windows XP.

I was already having bad problems with it due to upgrading the driver
before going to XP.  I've read here and elsewhere that many are
experiencing insufferable difficulties with the new drivers under XP.

I'm wondering if anyone has found a workaround for this wheel under
XP.  Can you use the old drivers and get any kind of functionality
under Windows XP?  (i.e. either the drivers off the cd or the 2.11.1
drivers that are still available on the TM website?)

Once again, I don't know about your particular wheel, but with my Nascar Pro
Digital 2 no other previous drivers work with XP.  I mean, the wheel works
with the default XP drivers, but it's without split axis.

I still use TM's latest XP-compatible (fat chance) drivers with my wheel.
Sometimes I get errors and sometimes I don't.  Lately, it's been at least
two or three weeks since I've gotten an error.  As long as I don't reboot,
things will be fine.

I loaded the drivers up using "manual" mode and use one profile, which I've
configured for split axis.  Using "automatic" mode with multiple profiles is
not wise, what with the complete instability of the drivers.

The way I see it is that if you're not concerned with split axis then the
default XP drivers will work.  Of course, you're in another ballpark with
the FF and I can make no comment on what the deal is with FF and old or new
TM drivers.

Are you saying that you can no longer turn your computer off at night
for fear of screwing up this particular installation of your steering
wheel?!?

Yeah, unfortunately Santa bought a lot of tech stocks last spring and
rumour has it he's passing out IOU's this Christmas :-).

That's correct.  But then again, I never did turn my computer off at night.
So in a sense it is no big distraction, considering also that with XP forced
reboots hardly ever happen (unless you have a screwy TM driver).

So the upgrade went well?

The 2.3.6 drivers (Thrustmapper 3.08) which are the latest worked fine for
me in RT, F1RC and F12001 (without ff) in XP. The only reason I had to go
back to the 2.1.6 was because the ff (patch) in F12001 was a mess (I'd say
that's ISI's fault since they never even tested this wheel with the patch).

Try the 2.1.6 drivers are here.

Just make sure you delete the previous drivers completely.

>So the upgrade went well?

I'm actually having a lot of problems right now, so many so in fact
that my brain is kind of fried thinking about it (printer doesn't
work, one of my hard disks responding strangely to XP and Norton 2002,
problems with the video drivers, and so on and so on).

Right now I'm thinking about undoing the XP installation and going
back to Windows ME.  The way things are going that won't work entirely
properly and I'll have to reformat the hard drive and reinstall ME
from the factory discs, which is not such a bad idea anyway, I guess,
its just that figuring out everything I need to back up and doing so
is a arduous process that I do not look forward to.

I never could delete 2.3.6 completely as far as I could tell; I mean I
deleted it manually and ran Clean.exe and even ran System Mechanic to
clean up the registry but then when I'd reinstall the old drivers I'd
still get warnings that I was overwriting newer files.  Very confusing
and frustrating, and the wheel hasn't worked a*** since I first went
to 2.3.6.

I was thinking about buying a new wheel until I realized my printer
didn't work under XP, and then I was thinking about buying a new wheel
and a new printer, and then my video card was acting weird so I
thought about buying a new wheel, and a new printer, and a new video
card, and while I was at it I thought I'd pick up a Mini Cooper S in
red with a white roof with the leftover change, and then I woke up and
thought, hey, maybe I should go back to Windows Me.

I'll try to digest your helpful notes below when my math skills have
returned to normal.

LOL.

Well I still think you'd be better off reformatting your hard drive and then
doing a clean install of XP. Your wheel, video card and printer should be
fine then.
