Which graphics card for GP3?

by Hugh » Thu, 27 Jul 2000 04:00:00

Sitting here in Bangkok; hoping that my order from the UK will be in the
post tomorrow, I am planning my usual hardware upgrade that accompanies
every Crammond release (the man has cost me a fortune!). It is clear my
Voodoo2 will not hack it; may not even work. The choice seems to be a
GeForce2 or a Voodoo5 or a what?
Recommendations welcome; thanks.

Apologies to everyone who has already read this.
But with my V5 I have to turn off one of the chips to get GP3 to run
acceptably.  If that sounds a bit drastic, it's not, it's just a setting in
the '3dfx Tools' control panel.
If the V5 is running with just one chip, GP3 is extremely fast, but with
both chips it goes only half as fast.  I know that probably sounds strange
but it's true.  I've also had confirmation from 3dfx that there is some kind
of problem there, although they wouldn't say whether it's just a simple
driver bug or a design flaw.  Also they didn't sound particularly bothered
to do anything about it.
The problem also occurs, although to a much much smaller degree, with GPL,
Thief and Superbike 2000.  These games are a few fps faster with only one
chip than running with both.
Based on that I would say if you are buying a GP3 card then get the GeForce
2 GTS.

Well, I don't know for sure, since I took my V3 out when I bought the new
V5, but the same problem certainly can't occur, because the V3 isn't an SLI
board.  I'm sure it will run to the full potential of the board.  Actually
there's been a few posts here recently from people getting a strange
triangle effect on the track, and apparently it is fixed with the latest
drivers.
