C300A @ 450 for 4 months = FRIED!!!!!

I know this is a sim NG..  but I know a lot of people use this system..
and thought they should know...

I bought a new system about 4 months ago..:

Celeron 300A  (Malaysia Week 47)
Abit BH6 m/b
64 PC100 ram

Since then.. I have put in :

Voodoo 2 card
Monster Sound MX300 card
Network card..  (10baseT)

I have been running GPL plus other apps.. and fairly processor intensive
programs....

volts...

RAN GREAT!!!!!!

I was thrilled....

THEN..  I decided to buy some more h/d last week...   went out and
bought a Seagate 4.3 gb harddisk..

I installed it..  along with my orignial..  turned on the power..
NOTHING!!!!

So I was then mucking around witht eh calbes..  tried every
combination..

I finally took it to be installed..  and they said they could find
anything wrong execpt maybe the m/d was damaged...

I then took it to wth supplier of the b/d..  and he tested it....   He
took out the 300a and put in a 333  and BOOM!!!!!!

IT WORKED!!!    I had damaged my c300a  :-(

than 33 degrees C. on the m/b

I eventually had to get a 333 cheap..  to replace the 300a...  and now
it only goes to 416  (5.0 x 83)..   but not 500  (5.0 x 100) yet..

DOES anyones know of any tricks to try to get this stubborn cput up
there???

I know the o'lcock web sites.. etc...  I went thru all of them..  read
everything..  the 333 is a crappy oclocker cos it won't do the 100 fsb
speed..  which is a bummer   :-(

I think you wil find that I just got REALLY unlucky...  and got a wierd
cpu..  I wouldn't think this ais the norm...   and wouldn't like to
discorage ppl from doing this..  it is great..

Any sudgestions???

I hope that when you were fiddling with the new hard drive and plugging in
and out connectors you were discharging static electricity?  Is it possible
that you might have fried the CPU during HD installation?  Just a thought..

Yes. Seems like too much of a coincidence to me too.

Yeah, it sounds like static electricity to me, also.  Generally, to
discharge static I like to stand barefoot in a pool of water as I grab
hold of the case and power plug simultaneously.  :-)

Actually, prior to touching any of the internal boards, I always clip
an anti-static strap to the case frame and discharge any static build
up.  That won't help you now, but it's something to keep in mind next
time.

Just coming into this thread.

I don't believe that you fried your CPU at 2,0V.

But this is a case for the overclockers-newsgroup - they are
desperately waiting for "fried-CPU" -input.

What probably happened is that with the second hard drive, you are getting a
voltage drop across your motherboard, so your CPU can't run at 450 at 2.0 V,
either set it back to 300, or increase the voltage to 2.1 or 2.2V, if your
board supports it.

Hi Marc,

Geez, I didn't even think of this.  I suppose this voltage situation
would also apply to PCI cards.  I pulled my V2 and Matrox last night,
and replaced them with a V3.  I am running at 2.3V right now.  Maybe I
could find stability (and relative comfort, leaving 2.3V behind) at
2.2V with the reduction of a PCI card?

Actually I experienced this. When I got a second Voodoo 2 card I had to
lower the speed of my C300A to 450 (from 464- due too RAM stability issues).

I don't believe it either considering I've been running my Celery at 2.7
volts(!) on and off since last October and I'm still using the same chip.
That person was full of it. Probably he's one of those folks that believe
you're "stealing" from Intel because you're overclocking.
