Of course building your own computer can save you a lot of money. I have

with the 1200 USD I saved not buying two P2 450 instead. I have Internet
to thank for the succesfull overclocking of C300A to 450 MHz. Mine works
without extra cooling.

But now I'm thinking of upgrading...

We all know the Athlon (K7) is faster than the P3 and I've just seen
some price tags here in Sweden for the K7 processor. It's cheaper than
the P3. K7 500 is around 290 USD, K7 550 around 480 USD and the K7 600
around 650 USD...

GP3 arrives sometime next year and I'm thinking a dual K7 500 solution,
what do you think? This would put me back around two times 900 USD. I

very fast, and the K7 500 is probably cheaper then. Perhaps I can use
the 1200 USD to upgrade to two dual K7 500 systems :o)?

/Christer, what do you think?

the moment that justifies the cost of a CPU upgrade at the moment. I'm
waiting for a P3 that hasn't been made yet, like around 800mhz, and
then I'm waiting for the price to drop. All my games play fine for me
now with my Voodoo3 and the next generation of Voodoo and Nvidia cards
claim to be much less CPU dependant (well at least Nvidida does that I
recall but I suspect 3DFX will too).

With the Athlon you need a new motherboard, with the BX board you can
just sit and wait and get one of the later P3's and just pop it in.

If you have your upgrade targeted for one game, especially GP3, wait
for it to hit the shelves for more than one reason. Could be like a
year or two late (j/k?) and it could be a resource hog like GP2.

Maybe faster then this PIII even if I still only trust Intel and half Intel
stock so I'm not gonna buy anyother processor, but when the PIIIs
coppermines come around soon it wil all be different.

see any reason to upgrade just yet.

There are a few non-autosim games coming out which are claiming to have
graphics that scale with processor speed.  Messiah, for instance, is
supposedly being designed so that somebody who plays the game in 5 years
on their P9-2000MHz w/Voodoo6 machine will have a MUCH more detailed
environment than the people playing the game now.

But as long as the games look the same on a 300MHz as they do on an
800MHz I can't see bothering with jumping on the new processor wagon...

you trust intel and that Big-Brother-like ID# that they put on the P3??

with features like that i'll wait till the Athlon goes to .18um and then
upgrade, thank you very much....call me paranoid but i think that whole
thing is just creepy.

Actually, I'll probably do what I did last time, which was wait until I buy
a papyrus sim that doesn't run well on my current setup, then upgrade. That

came out. From what I can tell, N3 should run just fine on this system...
maybe won't even need a video card upgrade....

there really isn't that much other impetus to upgrade, since I have a hard
time imagining my word processor, spreadsheet, etc. being much faster-- i
can only type so fast, after all. maybe voice recognition will become much
better....

just my personal upgrade strategy, though i wouldn't admit it to anyone but
you folks. if anyone else asks, i upgrade because of a carefully considered
analysis of the computer market etc., etc. :)

whooaaahaawww! Much more enjoyable than buying from a shop (PAH!) or
mail order company!

What m/b does the K7 run on? I have a standard PII m/b (Abit BX6) would
it work on mine? or do I need a new m/b as well?

Thanks......

That sounds as a good strategy for a hard core sim racer, like me. I think
I'll wait with the upgrade until there's a racing sim that wont run very
well on my current system. Could be F1RS3, TOCA3, but will probably  be GP3.

I will, but GPL still runs very well on my Banshee card :o).

/Christer, still thinks a dual processor system is the next step...

If you just want to get a bit more power then wait approx 3-4 months
for the P3-600 to come down in price.  It will eventually cost around
the same as a P3-450 now (200 dollars or so) and in 4 months if you are
lucky it might be the coppermine version giving a little speed boost
over what we have now (not to mention a lot more overclock potential).
You should be able to drop it straight into your motherboard.

Of course,  a twin athlon system will be damn fast but also damn
expensive and as yet there isn't even a multiprocessor board available.
I think they need to sort out the regular motherboard situation first.

P3??

You trust people who make ethernet cards with that big brother like
MAC address they put on their boards?  Or HD makers who put accessible
serial IDs into their hardware?

Why would I want just a bit more power??? I want a lot more power and a dual
K7 will certainly give me that. I will not be surprised if two K7 500 MHz
and a dual K7 motherboard will set me back less than 600 USD come January
next year... I dont think that's damn expensive...

I think the configuration above could almost be three times faster than my

/Christer, not prepared to buy a slower and more expensive CPU just because
it's called Intel. I'm stupid, but the limit has to be drawn somewhere :o).
Those are my principles. If you dont like them, I have others...
