GPL Hard drive access frequently HELP

by Peter Blanc » Fri, 16 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Hi, I read the post ref to shutting off findfast.exe and setting up the swap
file in WIN98 so that the problem of constant HD access while playing GPL
would stop.  It did but, a few questions...

1.  I was not having this problem the first time I installed a full version
of WIN98 on my system.  However when I reinstalled WIN98 last night on a
freshly formatted drive I also installed Office 97 b/4 installing GPL.
Could this be the problem?

2.  Once I switch the virtual file setting in the systems area to manual
everything works fine, but if I shut down the computer and reboot the
virtual memory settings return to "let windows manage".  is there a way to
change this perminantly?

My system:
ASUS P2B

64mb PC100 ram
Maxtor 7.2 G HD
Screamin 3D / Blackmagic Voodoo2 12mb
Monster Sound

Should I just hose the HD and start from scratch installing GPL b/4 Office
97 and not installing findfast?

Thanks in advance....

At the time I started the original post, I was remiss in following advice
I've given countless times as to knowing what programs are running on your
machine and shutting down everything unnecessary. <Blush>  Eric Busch, I
believe, was the one who said "Find Fast" deserved it's own spot in sim
hell.  I concur whole heartedly. That program might be of some benefit on a
dedicated business machine, but if you're gonna run sims it needs to die.
Kill that baby, and your troubles should be over. I've not had that HD read
problem since doing so.

rrevved's suggestion about the fixed swap file is also one I followed and is
working well.  If you set your "System Properties/Performance/Virtual
Memory" to a fixed size of 200mb, for example, the machine should retain
those settings if you click OK to exit all the windows.

GPL Hard drive access frequently HELP

I can't help you with the first one. It shouldn't be a problem, but hey,
it's Gates software so who knows?

The second one is no problem. Widoze does indeed set the option back but
still uses the previous settings. Only if those settings can not be used
(e.g. not enough diskspace for the swapfile) windows starts taking over
again.

Try this as an experiment. Set your swapfile to be at D instead of C and
than reboot the system. Now locate the .swp file and see where it is. If
it's still on the D drive you know it saves the settings.

Hope this helps,
Johan.
