GPL accesses Hard Drive Constantly

While 3 laps into a short intermediate race at Spa, GPL began an almost
constant HD read, resulting in a stuttering, undriveable condition.  This
continued almost unabated for about 3 minutes.  Anyone else experienced
this?  If you have, do you know how to fix it?  This was the first race I
tried, having spent all my previous time training and hot lapping.  (Well,
maybe lukewarm lapping)  This is going to be a real pisser if this condition
routinely occurs during races.  I certainly wasn't expecting anything like
this to happen on my system, which is:
p2 400
128 megs ram
V2
loads of available drive space
full GPL install

OK, rrevved, thanks.  I'll give it a try.

I don't know if these two files are responsible for his problems, but
regardless they both deserve their own special little place in hell...

I had this problem with different games. I tried the swap file thing and
still had the problem. I shut down most of the background programs with
'Contl-Alt-Dlt' but could not shut down "Findfast" without problems. I found
that it was in my startup file so I moved it and also the "Office Startup"
file to keep them from running and the problem seems to have gone away.

I've defragged and changed the swap file settings, but haven't had a chance
to try the effects yet.  I want to do that before trying these new
suggestions.  I have Office and the Findfast, but routinely shut down the
Office taskbar and anything else associated with it before running anything
other than Office programs.  I doubt the Office stuff was responsible unless
there's something else running in association that's not obvious.  But
"Findfast" is another story.  It has been running.  Just what is it and what
does it do?  Sounds like something good to nuke regardless of whether or not
the swap file changes fix the problem.  Right or not?   Thanks for the
suggestions.  I hate it, but now I'm going to have to leave here to test GPL
again. :-) BTW, GPL is the only thing I've ever experienced this problem
with, having worn out--among other things--F-15, LB2, F1RS, I-War, etc.

YE!!!! Remove findfast from your start menu immediately!! This program is
the enemy of simmers everywhere!

Findfast indexes your harddrives whenever it "think" you aren't using it.
I had this problem with NHL98.  My drive would start spinning and wouldn't
stop until about 5 minutes later.  I removed FindFast and the problem
disappeared.

Thanks to rrevved, Lou and the rest!  My problem seems to be solved. I'm not
sure whether it was the fixed-size swap file (I get iF-22 flashbacks when I
start playing around with swapfiles.  Brrrr!) or nuking the Findfast/Office
tsr's.  I know I said I was going to try one step at a time, but after
finding what "Findfast" does, I shut it down, pronto.  I've since run two
short, intermediate full-field races at Silverstone and  one at Spa with no
reoccurence of the problem, and assume it is solved.  It's probably my
imagination, but I seem to have picked up a frame or two during crowds on
the tracks as well.  Thanks again.

Sounds logical. Also, make sure that if you've got any MS Office  products
installed that you don't have Find Fast enabled. It kicks in every now and
then and reads your disk.
