Desparate Reactor Question

by Brian E. Na » Fri, 08 Nov 1996 04:00:00

I have a DELL XPS90 and everytime I plugged in the Reactor card I get a
mmsound.drv error before windows finishes loading and it says I must
reinstall windows! It crashed my registery. It seems to have something to
do with the video driver for the Reactor. I finally got my old video
board to work but lost some information in the process. Please help
someone.

P.S. Tech support said "BIOS UPGRADE". I have the latest verion (I'm
almost positive (version A05)) and contacted MRBIOS but it won't work
with my system.

I would check your PCI / IRQ / BIOS settings. Sounds to me like the
Reactor is grabbing what it thinks is a free IRQ, but sounds like that
IRQ is in use by the soundcard.

Just a guess though.

The reactor is locking up in a lot of systems. The BIOS tech support was
talking about is a file you can download from their site. It will
upgrade the BIOS on the reactor. It could solve your problem. contact
tech support. They are great.

Yes, they are locking up a lot of systems, and yes their tech support is
great.

But beware of _ANY_ 'BETA' BIOS.  When I flashed the BIOS, I had to
re-install my old video card in order to get a copy of the ORIGINAL BIOS
via email so I could reset the Reactor.  Some systems may not like the new
BIOS, so it would be a good idea to have the original handy in case this
happens to you.  And some of the older ( in my case just a year old )
monitors do not like this card. Mine would not sync at anything over
800X600, and I use 1280x1024.  So I ended up getting another monitor just
to use the card.

Use the new BIOS, and new drivers, but keep the old working ones handy.

Well that's a great idea. The bios upgrade killed my board completelty.
Or so I thought. Even when cold  booting, I had no video signal
whatsoever. Just a blank screen. I talked to tech support. They didn't
suggest e-mailing the old bios file, but to return the board.

I hope the new one works fine. These problems are really annoying, to
the point of making that board hardly usable over a period of time.
