Installing NR2003 on a remote server

by Dilbe » Fri, 21 Feb 2003 06:11:25

Hello,

This may be very basic but...

Have a dedicated win 2000 server that I'm trying to install NR2003 on
to use as a dedicated race server. I have access to the W2K server box
with Terminal Services and Remote Desktop. Problem is when launching
server for first time I get an error message that desktop must be set
to 16bit. Terminal Services is limited to 256 colors and I can't
change the desktop resolution.

How do I get the game installed remotely on the server?

Thanks

You will have to use something like VNC, PCanywhere,etc.. which you can
install via TS admin mode.

How would you install on a remote machine, when the CD isn't physically *in*
that machine???

Sounds like he got it installed, but can't start it because of the desktop res.

I've used VNC to control a server, it works pretty well.

Depends on how you're doing things.  If you can setup your local
CD-ROM drive as a shared drive on the remote machine (I'm assuming
Winblows here) you should just be able to run the installer from that
shared drive via your remote terminal.

Interesting.  I never thought of trying it that way.  Maybe I could have used
that with the first failed race I tried to host this year...
Thanks for the tip!  I'll seperiment around with that.

Ah, ok.  I guess I just misunderstood the question/statement.  I use VNC as
well.

If I was running a dedicated server, I can tell you what _I_ would do (or
try)...

I would copy the entire contents of the CD to a directory and leave it
there.  That, or creat an image that could be mounted using a software
utility.

That way if the need to reinstall it remotely ever came up, it would be
available.

The original question was directed at someone who didn't have *physical* access
to a remote server(one that was rented).
I've never been able to get one of those "images" to work correctly.  I gave
up.
