GPL and Controller Calibration Lockups

by Larr » Thu, 11 Nov 1999 04:00:00

Good Evening Folks..

Nope.  It ain't fixed in 1.2 either.  The Controller Calibration Lockups,
that is :(

Has _anyone_ figured out a way to stop this?

My last install this weekend took me SEVEN restarts (via the reset switch)
of the computer because the system would lock up HARD during controller
calibration.  I, nor my Registry, appreciates this :)

What _is_ it with Papyrus and it's Joystick drivers.  N2 and GPL both have
controller 'funkyness' that drives you nuts!

Something with your setup Larry, because I've never had one lock-up in the
Controller Calibration in a year of intensive GPL on either of my systems.
(Celeron 300A at 450, ABIT BH-6, SB 64 or SB Live!, Thriller AGP or V3 3000,
64 and 128M, latest everything except DX 6.1). Don't blame Papy's drivers,
if you ask me, they are the best in the business.

Direct input by-the-way.

Yeah.. I've had my GPL lock up during controller calibration too ALOT! I'm
running a P2 333, with latest drivers and updates for everything and it
still happens once in a while. Crossing the fingers kinda gets old!

Do you happen to have a Voodoo2 using Glide2.54?

No, no, no.  It's not my setup.  It's a totally clean Windows 98
installation with only the Wheel software and GPL installed.

Plus, this is a very common complaint.

It ain't just my system.

Thanks, though :)

I still say Papy's Joystick drivers suck.  They have been causing us
problems for years.

Good Question. Hold on a second...
Ok, I'm back.

I can't tell.  Where do you look?

I am running v2.07 of the drivers.  That is the last version I will install
because 3dfx removed the "Disable Monster 3D II Direct3D Support" option
from later versions, a blatant political move IMHO.

I do recall having this problem thruout various versions, though...

Ok, I found it.  Yes, the V2.07 drivers do use 2.54.  Is this a ***
version?

Why is it that only GPL has a problem with this?

Thanks :)

Ok, I didn't find a cure, but I think I have found a work-around.  The key
is to NOT try and calibrate your wheel when GPL wants to right after you
install GPL.

To the following, instead:

1.  Install GPL and patch up as necessary.
2.  Launch GPL.
3.  Put in your name and select your team/car.
4.  When the controller calibration screen appears, IMMEDIATELY hit return
to close it out.  Don't wait too long as your system will freeze if you have
the controller cal freeze problem.
5.  Do not set any options at this time.
6.  Start up a race as normal.
7.  When you are at the race screen for the particular race you have
selected, mash the options button.
8.  Calibrate your controller, do the assignments, and set other options as
necessary.
9.  Go racing :)

I can't help you with the problem, but personally I like the Papyrus
joystick driver because I don't need to mess with Windows joystick settings,
when using the Generic driver.  The papyrus driver also appears to be quite
smooth and accurate.

That will be fine until you buy a new controller that uses optical/digital
electronics for precision :)

Then you'll discover what a lot of the hub-bub is about :)

Hint - It don't work :(

Granted, this was a MUCH bigger issue when NROS was alive, since we had to
use Nascar Racing 2, and it was a DOS based game that did not support
Digital Controllers at all.

I was finally able to take the MSFFW out of the box.

Frankly, I'd just a soon put the old TMPro back on and still have NROS.  The
current way of multi-player of N3 sucks, IMHO.

Installing the reference drivers from 3dfx for my Monster 3DII card cured this
problem.

Easier option is to just put glide version 2.53 in your GPL folder, it won't
affect any other games or settings and will stop your lockups which are
caused by 2.54.
Apparently 3dfx removed something from 2.54 which caused problems with GPL.
