GPL Force feedback problems

by Dave Weav » Sun, 06 Jan 2002 05:49:09

I have a problem in GPL where the force feedback will
suddenly stop working (I get resistance but no force
effects or centering). If I then quit from the race
back to the track select screen the game then resets
the wheel (it centres itself), and I can enter another
race session and all is (usually) well again.

Has anyone else got/seen this problem?
Is there a fix?

I'm using:
    GPL 1.2.0.2
Windows XP (although I *think* I also had the problem
                in WinME)
    MSFF wheel (game-port version).

Cheers,
Dave

IIRC, the wheel will shut down the effects if it gets too hot. Try turning
down the strength. Maybe someone else can confirm this.

Most FF wheels do shut down if they overheat and its usually related to setting the forces too high.
This could be your problem, could also be a gameport issue on your soundcard.

Unfortunately I'm using XP, and (as far as I can tell) there
is no way for me to adjust the strength.
Unless anyone knows any different ... ?

You can set the force within core.ini.

That was an issue on some old  LWFFs.
I never heard this about the MSFF (but I'm not specialized on that wheel)

Normally I'd change force strength through the sidewinder
software, but I'm running XP and that software isn't
supported (thanks, Microsoft!).

I've tried adjusting "max_steering_torque" in core.ini,
from the original setting of 225, down to 80. This appears
to make no difference at all to the strength of the feedback.
Am I changing the right setting? To the right value?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Dave
