Monster Truck Madness - Modem Play - Help !!

by Jere » Wed, 28 Aug 1996 04:00:00

I can't get modem play to work ? If I run as host, and select modem
connection I immediately get a alert saying "The network connection
could not be opened". It hasn't even asked me for a number to dial
yet! I have a modem configured (in fact it is used by Dialup
Networking to connect  to my ISP). What's going on ?

Any help appreciated.

If you run as HOST than you will be HOSTING another player...as in THEY
WILL
CALL YOU. It's not asking you for a phone number to dial when you run as
host
because it has need reason to call anyone.

A friend and I had the same problem. It was solved by changing the
modem's settings (Control Panel >> Modem >> Properties) to:

19200; buffers both Low; Error, Compression, and Flow Control OFF.

That should do it.

OK. So what does the error mean ? Why is it trying to open a network
connection ?

When you host, it is attempting to prepare your modem to answer the
phone.  I'm assuming that the modem isn't responding for some reason,
which causes the setup to fail, which returns this error because no
network connection could be established with the joining player.  If
your modem has external lights, check to see if you can see the RD
lights blink as the commands are sent to put the modem in answer mode.

You also might want to check if you have any fax software installed and
active that might interfere with putting your modem in answer mode.
Another thing to try is have your friend host, and see if you get the
same type of problems with you join (which should prompt you to enter a
number to dial.)

Hope this helps,
Rich

Hi,

I don't know about the modem/network play, but I do like MTM. My son
really likes MTM because it allows you to drive off the track and drive
into the water, over hills, into outdoor toilets, etc. However, I think
you should have at least a Pentium to run this. I think I will buy it
whenever the full version is released.

It is out. I enjoy being totally sidways thru two corners with the
tires srceaming and the engine roaring. Then a big jump, flying thru
the air and not always landing on all fours. I can run a Head to Head
match using ipx in Win 95. Two 20 Ethernet cards and a cable. 50
bucks. Just think of going h 2 h with your son.
BTW: GP2 is the best, but I like almost all racing games. -=Don=-

I have the trial version and I can't get IPX networking to work in Win95.
My IPX n/w works fine in MSDOS for quake.  Any ideas?

I use TCP/IP with the dialer in 95 and connect to the other guy's IP address
(xxxx.xxxx.xxxx.xxxx). Of course if he doesn't have a static IP one of us has to have a second
phone line to tell the other guy what dotted quad to put in.

 There's also Kali and Kahn...

has to have a second

The easiest way to play MTR over the net is to go to http://beta.zone.com

There you can play Hellbender, or MTR full or Demo version.  And it's free.

Yeah, but as I found out by playing with someone else, when it has a
problem with latency, the game just makes up whats going on.

We were playing the game and talking over the phone and he would say
something like 'hey, I just rammed you", and it was not the same thing as
what I was seeing on the screen. When it gets mixed signals, it takes
over the driving until the connection is better. i don't like that....
