That Mount Panorama section is awesome. A bit like 2km of the
Nordschleife.

Incidentally, one of the Aussie TV stations pioneered in-car video
cameras for the "Great Race" in the 1980's - some of their stuff is yet
to be bettered, and beats the F1 in-car footage hands-down. I always
remember an in-car interview with Peter Brock as he manhandled his car
over the mountain. He didn't seem to mind answering questions either!

Hi Steve,
Bathurst is IMO one of the best tracks in the world..
It would, without a doubt, be one of the best tracks that could EVER be
made available as a add-on for GPL.
It has everything that a good track needs, including long straights for
drafting, a Laguna Seca corkscrew type dipper, sweepers, 90 degree
turns, switch backs and good (massive) elevation changes...
If this track was included in GPL, it would soon become the most
popular on-line track ever devised for GPL..

Cheers,
Ron

Steve, it's probably the closest to a "Spa" type circuit that it's possible to
get.  In fact, I think the elevation change (from lowest to highest points) is
the greatest in the world for a racing circuit.

It has a wonderful downhill straight (Conrod Straight) that, since the 1970s, has
been emasculated somewhat with the inclusion of a sweeping "chicane".  This
straight, in its original form, was awe-inspiring and it was great to watch the
drum-braked cars of the 1950s try to slow down for Murrays Corner at the bottom!

There are some sites around with details of Mount Panorama.  It is, incidentally,
a public road for 99% of the year.

BK.

Sorry Tim...I don't need to rain on your parade, but that is just a bit over-the-top,
mate!

Indianapolis is probably more deply ingrained as part of Americas culture than Mount
Panorama is with us.  The circuit has only been used for the 500 mile/1000 kilometre
event since the early 1960s (Phillip Island hosting the Armstrong 500 prior to the
move to Bathurst) and has only been regularly televised since the late 1960s.

The Indianapolis 500 has been around for a few more decades!

I think they were old developement screen shots over a year old. Can't see
them on the site any more.

Yes, in-car cameras were pioneered by ATN7 for use in the Bathurst 1000.
The first was around the late 70's where they used the remote controlled
shoulder mounted news camera with a radio link to a helicopter above and
then to trackside broadcast area. A milestone in motor racing IMO.

I might be biased being an Aussie, but Bathurst has produced many local
legends on both 2 and 4 wheels and unfortunately has claimed a lot of
lives due to it's high speed nature. Pretty dangerous, so much so in
fact, that our premier open wheeler formula, Formula Holden, will not
race there.

Actually pioneered in the 1970's, Michael.  Network Seven popped a fixed camera
into Williamsons Toyota Celica.

Mitch, could you please list the people who've died at Bathurst? (excluding Denny
Hulme, of course, as his death was due to a heart attack, not a race-related
incident).

On some TV footage I saw that there are armcos pretty close to the
track, and trees right behind the armco. How about cutting down some
of the trees and widening the run-off areas?

You mean Bathurst/Mount Panaorama beats the (AFAIR) 292 meters
elevation difference of the Nuerburgring Nordschleife?

Oh, most definitely.  No argument with that at all.  But that's a bit different to what you
originally said! :o)

What an excellent idea!  Hey...whilst we're at it, lets concrete the whole
area and turn it into an oval.
Better still, how about we just don't use it at all seeing that,
WOW!....motor racing must be a dangerous pastime.

I'm sure what could have been done, has been done. Run-off areas are
hard to reclaim especially when it is a steep embankment (the side of
the mountain), or a cutting in solid rock. I've ridden and driven around
it (it's a public road), the rapid change in altitude has to be
experienced to be believed both on and off the track.

Conrod Straight is another problem as it is long and undulating. A
touring car at nearly 300kph will lift the rear wheels even with
downforce. I would think a light flat bottomed open wheeler has the
potential to flip in these circumstances. Modification to the straight
was made in 87 (I think) after a driver died in that years touring car
race - but she's still dangerous.
