http://www.racesimcentral.net/;I bought
one of their books on stock cars and it's helped me a lot both in the real
world and in N3.  I personally would like to see a LOT more options on
setting up the cars now that I understand better.

I suck at being a crewchief.  I can feel if my car is "tight in", "loose
out", etc. but have very little confidence in my knowledge of the setup
options of a Winston Cup car.  I believe I read somewhere that N4 will
include some kind of advanced "adjustment" capabilities.

Wouldn't it be great if I could map my function keys like this:

<Key-1> Loose Entering Turn / Loose Exiting Turn
<Key-2> Tight Entering Turn / Tight Exiting Turn
<Key-3> Loose Entering Turn / Tight Exiting Turn
<Key-4> Tight Entering Turn / Loose Exiting Turn

By pressing the proper key my "Crewchief" makes his best guess an adjustment
to my current setup.  Maybe I'm dreaming, but this would be very cool...

Maybe if papy can release a good book about racecraft and a detailed
description of what things do such as the difference between shocks and
springs, ect. I think if there was options to tell a virtual crew chief
the list would be VERY long for it to work, probably every key on the
keyboard would be used up for dialog. If your overwhelmed with the
setups in GPL just wait till N4. ;) Setup makers will be in big demand.

Other than the driver input that I mentioned below, what other types of
input would you think Winston Cup drivers are communicating to their crew
chiefs?  Based on what I see and hear every Sunday it would not be such a
long list.  In fact what I mentioned is pretty much all I ever hear...

It's not so much during the race but during practice is where all the
talking would go on between crew chief and the driver to dial in the
basic setup. But your right that's pretty much what they say during the
race, from what we hear anyway. They can't say a whole lot because they
can't do a whole lot in 15 seconds. Although it must help when the
driver tells his crew chief that it doesn't have enough forward bite or
it's loose in the entry and the crew chief knows exactly what he is
talking about and how loose he is and how he likes the car. I guess it's
part of the driver\Crew chief chemistry. The virtual crew chief won't
know how little or how much to adjust it or what is even causing the
loose condition, it could be driver error. He could end up doing
something malicious to your car.

SpeedVision commentators really don't represent the brain-trust in racing.

For 3, is it loose on entry because the driver was trail braking? Or was he
already compensating with throttle? Was he apexing correctly, or fighting an
off-camber exit to make it tight on exit? Do we just assume that the car is
balanced in a steady state turn? Both ways? What if one corner is a 3, and
the next is a 4? Is it the car? or the driver? Was it a right turn? Or a
left turn? Uphill? Level? Downhill? Cresting? Is it bars and springs, or
would weight jacking solve it? Or could it be the driver needs to adjust his
line?

Four choices doesn't even come close to expressing the gross behavior of the
car, let alone the subtleties. You're far better off just driving someone
else's setup than trusting such a low-bandwidth simpleton.

Michael.
