DTR sim of the year? pfff. come on! DTR ain't a bad game but there have been
many better ones this year... GP500, RC2000, Nascar 3 and a number of
others...

Excuse me for bashing this, but a 1999 game of the year,
well..................HAS TO BE MADE IN 1999!!!
How about at least calling the 2000 game of the year award. And do a real
award to a game for the 1999 award made in 1999 like NASCAR 3, NASCAR
legends, or DTR!!

You Know that link of that mysterey sim is very misleading, you post a link
of the game of the year award and it seems that at first WSC is the game of
the year, I think it has to do with that huge ass picture of WSC and that
really small pic of DTR!

Here's my take on what you said:
DTR got my vote for 3 reasons. It is the first sim since GPL to break any
new ground at all, it worked very well right out of the box, and it's more
fun than anything else going right now. NASCAR 3 isn't near enough an
upgrade from NASCAR 2 to warrant any awards, and the multiplayer is
terminally broken. GP 500, while great, is nowhere near as unique as DTR.
There ar eseveral passable bike sims, but only one dirt racing sim. RC2000
wasn't even considered, and while not certain, I doubt it will be a big hit
in the US- and since that's where we're based, that has to be taken into
account.

I think they were right. RC200 is very good, but not as good as DTR.
Niether is N3 or GP500, in my opinion.

It's a sad year when Redneck Racing is sim of the year!

How narrow is your world view, Jalo?  "Redneck Racing?"  Gimme a break.

The award is dead-on, if you ask me.  DTR is fun, challenging to the diehard
sim racer, and accessible to the sim racing novice -- things that VERY few
other racing SIMS have accomplished.  GPL is challenging to diehard sim
racers, but virtually inaccessible to even THAT segment of the population if
they're not willing to invest hours and hours just to get up to speed.  NFS,
Test Drive, and other arcade racers are appealing to novices, but offer no
long-term challenges and hold little or no attraction to those who want
greater realism from their racing games/sims.

Dirt Track Racing has it all in a nutshell.  If you can't handle a little
dirt, then go enjoy your wine (whine?) and cheese, or your tea and crumpets,
or whatever -- but don't bash a great sim just because you're potentially
too close-minded to comprehend the inherent goodness in the concept.

I was not impressed with the graphics on the demo or the way the cars
handled.
was it improved in the final release of the game?

if not, I would have to agree with pierce.
DTR  racing sim of the year??

based on the demo I would not buy DTR

just my honest 2 cents worth

1999 Sim of the Year

For everyone who asked...

Rally Championship 2000 was not considered because it has not been released
in the United States yet.  (Thats not a slight to the Europeans and the rest
of the world!  It only means that many in the US, including several on our
staff, have not had the opportunity to try RC2000 other than the demo.
Believe me.. you don't want us voting on the DEMO <G>)

I would also like to add that we don't expect everyone to agree with the
outcome of the voting at PowerSims.com.  I doubt Motor Trend expects
everyone to agree with their car of the year <G>

As I can only speak for myself, I voted for DTR first because it opened up a
new genre for the sim racing community and did so with relatively few bugs
and problems.  That is not to demean N3, NL or GP500.

If GPL would have been released in 1999... we all know who would have won
<VBG>  The fact is, again my personal vote, DTR brought the most to the
table in 1999.

Thanks!

1999 Sim of the Year

by David Robinso » Sun, 02 Jan 2000 04:00:00

Well, since I have not tried DTR I cannot say if its good or not.  I like
GPL, but will admit the hours it takes to get up to speed in a nightmare.
I stopped playing it for six months due to a slow PC and other things and
well it took all might to get down into the 1:06s at Watkins, and I am
still running only 1:29s at Monza.  I am accustomed to runnings low 1:05s
at watkins and high 1:27s at Monza.  One game that does stand out in my
mind and its due to the third party support is SCGT.  The game feels like a
modern sports racer or sports sedan on slicks, and with the breadth of new
cars comming out its almost a new sim every week.  I had to pair down my
patch folder due to having so many cars and not seeing the ones I wanted to
race against, but a few times a month.  The cars handle distinctly
different from eachother, you have a wide vareity of cars with all the new
stuff, anything from a Sauber Merc, to Panoz LMP to a McLaren M8D in the
top class to even some stirring Lotus Cortinas.  The game does have a down
side, terrible online play, and the AI well needs adjustment,  I finally
got the AI sorted to where they keep up with me, but you really have to
watch out since they drive like Dale Earnhart during the early 80s.  I also
have Nascar Legends which is the first Nascar game I ever bought.  Its a
blast, you really gett he feeling like your running in the middle of the
pack even with the terrible AI at Riverside.  All the dirt flying in front
does give you an idea of what it was like to be in the car at that track
during a Nascar race.

Best Pure Sim is GPL

Best Sim to mess about with to me is SCGT.

Best feeling like you are really in the car during a real race to me is
Nascar Legends.

Well that my two cents.

I am very happy with DTR, a true sim, flawless performance and loads of fun.
But... even though it is an "old" sim I have to cast my vote for GPL.
