GPL and OpenGL patch - how good is it on TNT2??

by gmo.. » Wed, 14 Jul 1999 04:00:00

I've been considering getting GPL but I'm concerned at the lack of
'out-of-the-box' support for anything other than Glide.  I do have an
old VooDoo2 card in my machine but I plan on getting rid of it as soon
as possible since I have an Ultra TNT2 and don't see the point in
wasting a slot on the VooDoo.

I know theres a beta patch for OpenGL - but how good is it?  ie with
respect to graphical glitches and speed?  It's been my experience that
games developed for Glide experience all sorts of problems when patched
to use D3D or OpenGL.   Also,  does it work with the (in)famous 1.1 GPL
patch?

 (I'm running a Celeron 400 at 450 and a Xentor32 clocked to 175/200)

thanks,

GPL and OpenGL patch - how good is it on TNT2??

by Andrew Swor » Wed, 14 Jul 1999 04:00:00

I'm running GPL ( no 1.1 patch ) with TNT2 770 32 meg  ( non ultra ) with
OpenGL patch on 98 ( no service pack ), Celeron 366, with 128 meg of RAM.

I can only get the game 640 * 480. When I try 800 * 600 I get an exception
error.

I'm only in the initial stages of configuring this. I would be interested to
hear if anyone has it working.

GPL and OpenGL patch - how good is it on TNT2??

by Paul » Wed, 14 Jul 1999 04:00:00

I had similar problems.

Solved mine by running openGLbeta 2 patch - running diamond 401 drivers- and
adjusting mirror refresh rates - and turning mirror detail to just cars
only. The last one seemed to be the most important as it wasn't till I did
this that crashing stopped.

Hope it helps.

P.S I also cheated by getting sick of the hassles, I bought a Voodoo3 2000
PCI card and put it in my system. I have Viper770 and V3 in the same
machine.

When I want to run the other card I have to change bios setting to boot to
the card I want then tinker with display settings to get the right card
going. Usually takes 2 boots.I'm using win98

So now I have the best of both worlds.

GPL and OpenGL patch - how good is it on TNT2??

It seems to vary depending on system.  Personally I've had nothing but good
luck with both the Hercules Dynamite TNT2Ultra and the Diamond Viper
770Ultra.  With the OpenGL Beta2 patch the Hercules (clocked at 175/200 just
because some other beta software doesn't like it overclocked) runs at
1024x768 with most details on, cars only in mirrors and 36fps online and the
770Ultra runs best at 800x600.  Mirror settings in the core.ini are 1.  Both
these cards run on either a P2-400 or a Celeron400.  Considering the
Xentor32 with the latest drivers has been reported to be faster than the
smokin' Hercules, I'm sure you should have no problems (I ran both the
latest Hercules/Diamond drivers and the latest NVidia reference drivers with
GPL and had no probs).

Of course these are just my observations, mileage may vary.

It's the best racing sim ever written.  It's now $20.  Look in the
dictionary under "no-brainer" and you'll see a picture of a GPL box.

The OpenGL patch works.  The TNT OpenGL drivers are twitchy.  You may
need to try a couple of versions of the TNT drivers until you find one
that's stable at all resolutions on your machine.  Then you'll probably
need to slow down your mirror refresh rate to get 36 fps all the time.
(With a CL TNT 1 and a P2-412, I have the mirrors refresh every 5
frames.)  Once everything is set up right, it's stable.  The laggy
mirrors are somewhat annoying, but not unbearable.  And you can always
fall back to the Voodoo 2 if necessary.

I've had all resolutions from 640x480 to 1600x1200 working, with older
TNT drivers.  I only really use 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768; my TNT
1 can't sustain 36 fps at 1152x864 or higher, so those resolutions aren't
very useful to me.  I'd be interested to hear how well the TNT 2 Ultra
runs at higher resolutions.

Make sure your desktop is at 16-bit color, as starting from 8 or 32 bpp
tends to give immediate page faults.  Try starting from different desktop
resolutions.  Try different versions of the TNT drivers.  (Start with
the newest reference drivers and work backwards through versions if you
have problems.)

Installed the 1.1 patch and the leaked 2.08 beta 1 TNT drivers last
night.  GPL worked at 640/800/1024, but only if I started from a
1024x758x16-bit desktop.  And there was font corruption on some of the
text in the game.  I'll try the official 2.08 beta 2 drivers next and
see if they're friendlier.

On this TNT2 business. Has anyone had any success getting screenshots
using the OpenGL patch? I hit Printscreen but all I get is Zero length
files.
