TNT2 OpenGL for GPL?

TNT2 OpenGL for GPL?

Enough acronyms for ya?  I'm considering swapping my current Monster
Fusion for a TNT2 card but want to make sure GPL will still be
playable.  I would appreciate any comments regarding GPL performance
with a TNT2 card and the OpenGL beta (rastOGL I think).

Yea, it's playable alright, if you forget the mirrors. But if GPL's your
priority then maybe you'd like to rethink that move.

Rearview mirrors are broken alright. Better stick to voodoo.
I have both a creative labs TNT2 and voodoo 2.
The voodoo works much better with GPL.
But then again the TNT  kicks the voodoo's ass in other games.
You can get a voodoo 2 real cheap these days. Why not get both?

And both my TNT2 Ultra are far superior in GPL to my Voodoo2 SLI combo. :)
Heck, even gave better more stable framerates than the Voodoo3 3000 I had.
But, yes, mirror implementation is not good at all.

I just did this exact thing. You will need the patch for TNT2.
Be prepaired, the graphics aren't even close to what the Rendition
provided. It was beautiful at 800x600 with rendition.

Smooth frame rates.  Not any more.
The OpenGL didn't seem to speed frame rate any.
My Dell PII 300, 128 ram,  TNT2 Ultra dosen't have close to
enough horsepower to run the sim!! About 14 fps...

i think you'll find, it's the GPL code which can't utilise opengl correctly..

TNT2/SB Live/P3 550.   Hot lapping I get maximum frame rates at all
times with max graphics at 1024*768.  In a race with as few as 8 other cars I
get serious slow downs
in the first turn and noticable slowing when in the company of even 3 or 4
other cars during the race, at max graphic settings.  Mirror are completely
useless.  If GPL is important to you then go top end Voodoo.
Unless(fingers crossed) the OpenGL Beta batch becomes more than just beta
and actually fixes the mirror problem,  but I haven't heard that they are
doing any more work on it, other than blaming the problem on Nvidia.

How do you know?

Papy says it's an unoptimized function (the one they use to copy textures
from behind the car to the mirrors) in the TNT OpenGL drivers.

Nvidia says they're looking into it.

If future OpenGL drivers (from Nvidia or someone else) can run the
current OpenGL GPL patch with full-speed mirrors, then we'll know
that Papy was right.  If Papy releases a patch that fixes the problem
then we'll know that Papy was wrong.  If we're still playing GPL in
a couple of years when computers are enough faster to fix the problem
for us, then we won't care.  Until then, who knows?  I tend to believe
Papy until I see evidence to the contrary.  They usually know what
they're doing.

Anyway, my P2-333 (overclocked to 412) with 64 MB and a TNT1 was
enough to run OpenGL GPL fine, except for the mirrors.  So I think
the original poster should be able to get decent performance on his
system with some tweaking.

If you expected GPL to run somehow better with OGL, there's something
terribly wrong with you.

But if you're getting only 14 fps on average, there's something TERRIBLY
wrong with your system and it ain't your TNT2. A mere vanilla TNT easily

OpenGL section) in GPL when mirror refresh rate is reduced to 1/8. Yea,
the mirrors absolutely SUCK with OGL renderer as everyone ought to know
by now. Other than that, it works quite flawlessly and it looks quite
nice too as can be seen from these shots:

        http://www.tol.oulu.fi/~midpro/GPLshots.html

That said, TNTs are hardly the optimal solution for GPL. If you're only
into GPL, there's no freakin' reason for you to go for TNT. I myself
enjoy GPL immensely but also play several other games - most of which
are D3D - in addition to some 3D modeling. I chose TNT and later TNT2 and
haven't looked back. If you regret your decision, as it would seem, then
getting a TNT2 was obviously a bad choice in your case.

Thanks for all the objective responses to the original post.  Just ordered a
Voodoo3.

I did not want to wait until next spring for Voodoo4 and picked up the
retail Voodoo3 3000 for $65 delivered from valueamerica.com.  Gotta love web
shopping.

Do you find the V2 pass through cable destroys some of the excellent
video quality you can get from the TNT2 on its own? (you might need to
remove the cable to see if you can spot the difference).

I'm considering the TNT2 with a V2 so I am interested in what you
find.
