Don't worry, lack of ability isn't stopping anyone else getting online
:-)

I use a mixed field for offline racing. 10 ai with two of each car
except the slowest 2. It simulates online racing quite well, because
the AI can't drive the LXs very well either ;-)

I always select cars in the same order so that AI 1 & 2 always drive
the LX6, 3 & 4 always the LX4, 5 & 6 the FX, etc. I'm not sure if the
AI learn specific cars as well as specific tracks, but they seem to
need all the help they can get at times, so fingers crossed this helps.

It certainly makes for a decent racing experience, because the mixed
field means there's plenty of scope for overtaking incidents between
the AI which keeps cars spread out and the laps more interesting &
involving for me.

How do you drive with a mixed field such as this?  Every time I attempt to
change the cars in the race setup, I keep getting my car instead of the
AI's.  So I end up changing the car I'm driving and not the AI's car.

Is there a special way of doing this?  All I do is add an AI car, then
select it and go to the garage.  Once in the garage, however, it's no longer
the AI's car but mine, even if I haven't added my car to the race yet.

Enlighten me, please.  LFS is a great car sim, but the processes one has to
go through to do certain things is rather cumbersome at times.

Thanks in advance,

Did some searching and found out how to get a mixed field.  A rather
convoluted process, I must say.  Heck, if I had known this before, I
could've gotten 600 credits rather easily, since it's easy beating GTIs when
you have the faster car.

But I did it the hard way, with all cars of the same class.  :)

Choose a car as if you're going to drive it. Now click the "add AI"
button and an AI driver will be added to the race using whatever car
you selected. Now change your car to another car, add AI, etc, etc.
It's a bit tedious, but so is much of life :-)

For getting up to 600 points quickly you send all the AI out in the
GTi, then change to the fastest car available (the next one up's
available from the start) before joining the race. It's cheating,
but...er, so is much of life.

Is it cheating, thats how i got all my money lol...?
Havn`t tried a mixed grid mind.... will give it a go in a mo..

One thing i don`t know is when you play online does it cache your car skin
to there computer...?

Cheers

Or, for more fun, check the box under the miscellansous menu which forces
the AI to use the player's setup.  Setup a car with something really absurd
(my personal favourite is knobby tires with low pressure, soft springs,
about a foot of ride height and almost no damping) and save the setup, then
join the race.  Add the AI cars and they all have this stupid setup.  Now go
back to the garage and load in a normal setup.  You'll easily win, and it's
also fun to watch the AI try to cope with their bucking broncos.

It's all part of the rich tradition of the "Gentleman Racer".   ;o)
