What is the best 3d Video Card to use ?

by Da » Thu, 27 Nov 1997 04:00:00

Can anyone give me some info on what seems to be the best video card to use? I
am thinking about upgrading and want to get some idea of what to get.  I have
a 133Mhz system with 32 meg of RAM, but the video card needs to be upgraded.
I am an avid GPII player and the new TOCA Touring Car Chapionship seems like
it may be on my list as well.  I had real problems with the new Microsoft Cart
sim demo (just to darn slow) and I thought it's time to upgrade from my
standard SVGA Card.

Thanks,

Dan

No 3d card will do a thing for GP2 -- it doesn't support 'em and won't.
Best you can do there is get a fast 2-d card.

For more games, etc ... 3dfx seems to be the way to go.  But if you like
ICR-2 you will need a Rendition board as that game will not support 3dfx
(and won't be updated either).

Your real decision is to get a card now or wait 3-6 months for the next
generation.  3dfx's Voodoo II is due out end of Q1 or beginning of Q2
...  But of course it will be more expensive.

For about $150-$175 you can get a Canopus 3dfx card w/6mb .. that seems
to be the way to go for 3d only (you will still need to use your 2d card
w/this product).

I have a Dimaond Monster 3d which is a great card -- it's probably not
teh fastest any longer but you can find it for about $125-$130 ... see
http://www.pricewatch.com ... and the other thing, it only as 4mb vs
Canopus's 6mb ...

Just my $.02 ...

I can't comment on TOCA but you should be aware that GP2 very unusual
inasmuch as it is entirely dependent on cpu power and your graphics card has
NO effect whatsoever. Depending on your motherboard, you may find that the
cheapest option is to change your cpu to the IBM/Cyrix p200+ (available for
50ish) Whatever, you should not buy a new graphics card to run GP2!
