NFS SE and Voodoo 3?

NFS SE and Voodoo 3?

by Rober » Thu, 18 Nov 1999 04:00:00

Has anyone tried and was successful in getting the original Need For
Speed SE to work with a Voodoo 3? I like the original more than the
second and recently tried to re-install it on my computer. It locks up
during the install with a black screen. After a CTL-ALT-DEL I have to
shut down IFSW.exe (something like that). If I try and install the DOS
version, my mouse will not leave the upper left 1/4 of the screen. I
switched from DirectX7 back to 6.1 with no change. NFSSE was originally
written for DirectX 2 so I have my doubts about if it will work or not.
EA's web site is a little vague when it comes to compatibility. Is my
NFS SE destined to become a coaster?

I think your best shot would be installing the MS-DOS version and then
booting with a MS-DOS bootdisk. NFS has a lot of trouble with memory in
Windows.

It has been ages since I've played NFS SE. It was my favorite for a long
time when it first came out. I've only tried it once after playing GPL.
It's hard to believe now that at the time I actually thought it was a
good sim :-)

That goes on the planning for this evening. Doing a few laps on Burnt
Sienna with the Viper.

It's not a 3d accelerated game, it runs on your 3D card (despite this
it will run fiune and very fast on a modern computer of course).

Ya, it was one of the first Win95 games, so that may not work. But the
DOS version was very stable, I'd try that. And I agree, it's by far
the best game in the series.

UPDATE:

I was able to get it to install and run. I had to turn my 3d
acceleration off, switch to 256 color mode and reboot. Worked great. I
wasn't able to install the DOS version as suggested since my mouse
wouldn't leave the upper left 1/4 of my screen. I couldn't get past the
first installation screen to continue. I didn't try installing the DOS
version again after I got the Windows version installed. I must have
gotten spoiled with all the new 16 bit games available. NFS SE doesn't
look nearly as good as I remember it, although the frame rates are
great :) It is still fun to play though. I like the option of getting
to drive cars that I might actually see on the street on a course that
could be realistic. A couple of lacking features with EA's second
version. I have NFS 3 but haven't installed it yet. I am expecting
nothing more than a revamped version 2. NFS 4 looks like it could be
fun though. I just wish they would release car packs, maybe a vintage,
current, truck, ect. I have little interest in driving cars I'll
probably never see in my life on a computer sim. Although it might be
fun to drive one in real life.

IMO they have never equaled (or even come close to) the car design and
driving physics, the track design, and 3D accident physics of the
original NFS.

The first one was great fun.  The second one, which I eagerly awaited, was a
total piece of crap.  The third one is nothing like the second one, it is
very pretty to look at, has some cars you might see in your lifetime and has
an absurd driving model that is not realistic at all, though fun in a
brain-dead arcade sort of way.

NFS4 is like NFS3 with a very slightly better driving model and much
crappier "tracks".  Endless meandering roads.  It also includes all the
tracks from NFS3.  4 needs better hardware, though the cars (IMHO) don't
look as good and the tracks don't look any better.

There are zillions of cars available for download for NFS3.  Go to someplace
like Yahoo and put Need For Speed in the 'search' box and hit enter.  Spend
10 minutes looking at what you get and you will find tons of downloadable
cars.
