Papy CART and ICR2?

by Mike » Fri, 07 Nov 1997 04:00:00

Racers,
Riddle me this oh race fans. Is is true that the new Papyrus CART I saw
at E.B. today is really just ICR2 repackedged? Is there anything new at
all? I read on the box that five tracks were enhanced, sounds just like
ICR2 to me. It says it comes with some guide and a ten buck rebate, for
thirty bucks on the box that makes the manual twenty, any racers out
there that could fill me in would be appriciated. My copy of ICR2 came
with my Rendition card (no manual) and I'm tempted to pick it up for the
info.
        All the best, Mike Davis

Aside from the convenience of having the most recently patched
DOS/Win95/Rendition versions on one CD and the handbook (more below),
nope, don't think so.

A long time ago (1 1/2 years?) there was going to be a ICR2
handbook published by the same publisher (Sybex maybe?) that did the
NASCAR1 handbook.  That got shelved.  Apparently this is what's being
included with CART Racing.  It should be worthwhile (YMMV), although I
haven't seen the handbook myself (although I'll probably pick it up
next time I'm out).

As far as the ICR2 *manual*, I don't know if there'll be a paper
manual (the original was 160 pages) or a CD-ROM version (as Sierra
seems fond of doing).

Before you send me UCE, I know what you're thinking...  Did he complain
to five or six postmasters last month?  Now, you must ask yourself one
question: "Do I feel lucky?"  Well, do you, punk?

Hi Mike :)

%Racers,
%       Riddle me this oh race fans.

hmm, ok, what's balck & blue, and.. oh, not that riddle..

% Is is true that the new Papyrus CART I saw
%at E.B. today is really just ICR2 repackedged?

Yes, it's true..

% Is there anything new at
%all?

No, nothing that you don't either already have, or have access to.

% It says it comes with some guide and a ten buck rebate,

The 'guide' is written by Steve Smith (ex. Car & Driver editor) and is
apparently a very well written book (knowing Steve, it'd have to be!).
All told, the thing would be $20 (as you said)...
So is the book (and manual in your case) worth $20..  I'd say
probably.
<AFAIK>, there is no other way to get this guide... Maybe someone who
has read the thing  (Marc?) will chime in and tell us how the book is?

Best,
-Rob

The book is exceptional in my humble opinion.  I bought Cart for $29.95,
but it included a $10 rebate.  In my mind I paid $19.95 for the manual I
have wanted for a long time.

-Paul

No pictures in the manual.  All text.  206 pages.

CashCow I say.
They could have reditionized all the Tracks or added Network play a least.
This was suppose to be out a few months after the 3D Blaster was.
All for a lousy book.
Come on Papy. You could have done better.
And for those poor people who do not have a Rendition, 1 less reason to buy
when
they are standing in the store wondering which to buy, CPR or CART.
Save your money.

What...the book?  When the blaster was released, Steve Smith (the
author of the included book) hadn't hardly put pen to paper (this I
know).

If you get the chance, have a look at the book before you make
such a judgement.  I like to think of it as an ICR book - with a
companion CD.  =)

They didn't have to release the book, and they certainly didn't
have to give the buyer an extra $10-bucks in return.  I think the
later was a nice touch.

I would presume that if they're "poor", that they probably don't
have the required resources to run CPR effectively.  As beautiful
a sim it is (in most areas), it is a CPU nightmare for the unwary.

I say to any new comers to the sport to try both, and make up their
own minds.  =)

Cheers!

In article

Is there a review of the book anywhere? Does anyone in
the group have it that would be willing to share with us
their impressions? What kind of information does it
provide, and to what depth? etc, etc...

I'm one of those who doesn't have the ponies for CPR
(P120) and might consider shelling out $20 for an up to
date ICR with a nice, helpful book.

Helmets aren't fixed...The only new item is the handbook by
Steve Smith...There is however, a $10 rebate, so a book (with a
free CD game) is a good buy.  =)

Cheers!
