First the games controller will only recognize the first (ID #1)
controller selected.  Make sure that you have your game port is selected
in the Advanced tab of the games controller.

Can you get GPL to recognize your wheel via the generic input option.
If not, then I think the problem is with your soundcard's setup in
Windows.  As a last resort, you may wish to restart Windows in safe mode
and remove your soundcard from the Device Manager.  The reboot and
reinstall the soundcard.  Of course make sure you have the drivers you
need before you attempt this.

Joystick not connected!!

Adding a TM gamecard *might* fix the problem, which seems to be
in the Creative SB Live! card and the way it "talks" to Win9x.
Check to see if the joystick port on the SB Live is good by
selecting the "Generic" driver in the Controls screen in GPL. If
the port is good, you'll be able to calibrate and use your game
controller now. If not, return the card to your retailer, the
port is toasted. The 0200-0207 address is correct for the card.

AGP, Black Magic V2 12 Meg., SB Live, Win 95 OSR2, Dx 6, current
"release" drivers.

When I installed my SB Live, things went very smoothly and
everything worked just as I hoped. After about two weeks the
joystick port went completely out of my SB Live (no response even
in generic mode). I removed the card and installed a cheapie
Yamaha card I had laying around. Once again, things worked fine.

Yesterday, I finally got around to getting into town and
exchanging the defective card. Got home with the new one, pulled
the Yamaha card and re-installed the SB Live. Still no joystick!
However, on this one, the joystick port is good, since setting
GPL to "Generic" will allow me to calibrate and use my wheel.

The Game Controller applet in the Control Panel showed "Not
Connected" for both my wheel or my joystick. However, the Direct
X applet showed "no problems".

I removed Direct X using the instructions on Bill's Workshop
http://www.billsworkshop.com/techtips/ , but this didn't fix the
problem, as when you remove the Direct X Control Panel joystick
applet, you don't get your Win9x one back. Removing and
re-installing the SB live didn't help.

Finally, I was able to fix the problem this way:

1.) Remove the SB Live card and it's drivers

2.) Remove Direct X (using the instructions above)

3.) Go into your windows directory and renaming WIN.COM to
WIN.OLD. By renaming WIN.COM, your OEM CD thinks it's a new
install, and won't give the error message that "This CD is for
installation on New Systems only, and is not intended for upgrade
purposes." (Not everyone will get this message from using their
CD, but mine is an OEM CD, so it looks for WIN.COM as a way to
check if it's a new install.) However, once the install starts,
the setup program will see your existing registry and treat it as
an upgrade, preserving all your existing settings.

4.) Re-install Win 95 (or 98) over your existing copy. Do not let
Windows setup replace any newer drivers it finds.

5.) Replace the SB Live card and install it's drivers. (This
should get you the original Joystick applet back in your Control
Panel.)

6.) Reinstall Direct X.

After doing all of that, you should now find that your game
controller will be OK and will calibrate normally.

Hope this helps...it seems that while the SB Live! is a very
good card, it's interface with Windows and particularly Direct X
needs a bit of improvement. :)

Doc

Joystick not connected!!

Hello BP astro 7,

What driver is currently selected for your joystick?  I have an SB Live!,  and
the gameport works very well.  In fact, I have a TM ACM game card that I removed
from the system after installing the SB live.  The joystick response is more consistent
and games run slightly faster since the port is PCI based, not ISA.
You should be using the "Creative Gameport Joystick" driver under W98.
Could there be another gameport in your system anywhere?  For example, if you
have on-board sound, it may still be providing a joystick port.  You could try what Doc
suggests, or just remove all of the related drivers under
"Sound, video and game controllers" then reboot the system.  When it finds the SB Live,
reload using the newest drivers from the creative site.   You should probably also get the
newest sidewinder software from uSoft.  If all of this doesn't fix it, your SB live is
probably
bad and you should return it for another.  BTW, I'm using DirectX 6, not 6.1.

Best Wishes,
Scott
