I ve

-P2 233 (QDI 66mhz Motherboard capable up to 333)
-1 DIMM  128Mb
-CL Voodoo2 8Mb
-Thrustmaster Formula1 attached to SB16 (jittering after weeks without
cleanning pots)

i want to update ...

QDI 100Mhz + P2 400  good enough ? how many AI cars at 640x480 wuth 36fps?

my memory doest supports 100mhz ... will it work ok with a QDI 100 Mhz
motherboard ?

Thanks in Advance

PS : c u racing online soon ... i hope

You'll get 36 fps most of the time except at the start where it may be
initially round 20 and rapidly rise to high 20's. Once field spreads a
little you should be back to 36.
If your're on a budget - have you considered a Celeron 300A running at
450mhz? If you take this option you will have to be more careful about m/b
option. Not all of them allow you to choose your own system bus speed. Abit,
Asus, and Gigabyte do - have a look at tomshardware.com or anandtech.com
etc.
Not familiar with QDI motherboards, but as long as its designed to take a
slot 1 processor and supports 100 mhz bus, cant see how it can be a problem
with a PII400. Is it an Intel BX chipset? - the althernative ones from ALi
and SIS are somewhat slower.

OK, here's my specs.

QDI Brilliant I 100Mhz M/B (warning - you may need the ver 1.1 BIOS if
it's not  there - mine came with BIOS ver 1.0, which didn't support the
higher-end CPUs)
Pentium II/400
Matrox Millenium G100 AGP
Matrox M3D PowerVR (Yes, OK, not supported by GPL, but I don't care...
8)
Creative 3D Voodoo Blaster
Creative AWE64 Value (which I regret - should have gone for the Gold...)
NE2000 compatible network card (for LAN-based games)

On the grid at Monza with a full field and all the effects/detail I get
a steady 20-21 fps at 640x480. In training I get a steady 36 fps. During
a race after the field has started to spread out I rarely drop below 30
fps (and I'm usually seeing 36 fps anyway).

I'm looking to buy a second Creative Voodoo Blaster (when I'm paid
next... 8) and another 128Mb of RAM.

As far as I'm aware, yes. It may slow things down a bit, but it'll save
you having to buy new memory in the short term.

Could well do. Once I start seeing reasonably-priced USB modems over
here in the UK I may well invest. I'll probably be propping up the back
of the grid in my Ferrari, but hey - it's all good fun! (I can run
consistently at Monza in the low 1:33's with the default setup and 8
gallons of fuel; my best at Monza was a 1:31.27 (last night!). At the
'Glen I can lap consistently at 1:13 with a best of 1:10.52 (again last
night). So I'm getting there slowly - perhaps I ought to use some of
Alison's setups... 8)

Well, if you're feeling brave (and quick with your credit card) get a
Celeron 300A and an Abit BH6 or BX6 motherboard...around 95-98% will
overclock to 450 MHz or even faster..running one with a Stealth II S220 4MB,
it NEVER drops below 30fps

Actually, it probably WONT.  It might, but it won't slow things down.  It
probably won't even boot at 400MHz (if you are using a PII and not a
Celeron).  You see, the 233 uses a 66MHz bus speed for all of the
motherboard and memory (not the PCI/ISA cards though...they run slower).
So, you can get by with cheap RAM.  But, if you use a PII 400 (or a Celeron

Celeron 400s, however, use a 66MHz bus speed, which is part of why they are
slower/cheaper.  So, if you use a PII350 or up, or overclock a 300a, make
sure you get some 'PC100' RAM.

Fwiw, I'm running the 300A at 450 mhz, with the Thriller 3d 8mb pci card -
In GPL, I get 30 fps at the starting grid, and am at 36 by the first turn,
and usually stay between 34-37 throughout the race. This is with 20 cars,
detail bias all the way to the right, 800x600, and all textures on.

Good point. However, under the original BIOS, I couldn't use the 100MHz
bus speed, so I was *under-clocking* my PII/400 (it was running at 266,
ie. 66MHz bus speed x 4 instead of 100Mhz b/s x 4) until I flashed the
BIOS. So yes, you *could* use the 66MHz RAM, and it *would* slow down
the machine, but it's pretty damn pointless buying a 100Mhz bus CPU.
Might as well get a Celery... 8)

Psssssst.

Did you try to overclock your CPU?
