GPL sucks

by Chri » Thu, 15 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Hi, I'm a fan of GP2, and it was quite a lot of time I've been missing to
look in this ng, yesterday I was very surprised to see the amount of
postings about GPL... I thought it was a great game, so I decided to
download the demo....

After the installation, I've found that yes, it's quite realistic but.... no
way to compete with GP2!!!
Graphics: even if supports 3D cards, I think that GP2's are better anyway...
Sounds: maybe my awe64 had some chips broken..

Are we talking about the same GPL (Sierra) game?

Bye, Chris.... (looking forward for GP3)

The car setup in the demo sucks. Even the default setups in the final
game are miles beyond the demo.

Eh. Personal preference

Engine sounds in demo are placeholders from Nascar2, apparently. They're
different in the final version.

It took us about a week to get the car around Monza driving in a G3 without
crashing. Then something happens and you fall in love. Give it good long try
and I bet the same might happen to you.

Graphics.....Sounds...???

How about physics modeling?!? Track details like camber, elevation?!?
or do you only like driving sims for their eye and ear candy?

Note GP2 was my favorite sim before GPL and GPL's graphics put GP2 to shame
at least if you have the proper 3d card.

The sounds are ok, except for the Ferrari engine which is awesome.

GPL's physics make GP2 feel like driving the old Pole Position arcade game,
especially GP2's canned spins.

Give GPL another try, it's the best thing out, GP3 probably won't see the
light of day until 2010.

Seeyas on the track.

GPL sucks

by J » Fri, 16 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Man you're so wrong! GPL is superior to GP2 in nearly every way. But
the one way I'll mention is sim time vs real time. GP2 warps time
whereas a lap of 1:30:69 (my new best at Monza. :-) ) in GPL takes...
surprise surprise! 1:30:?? in the real world. The way it should. Geez:
with various graphic settings in GP2 you can go from actually doing a
1:25 sim time Monza in 1:22 real time! - to taking over two minutes
real time with more graphics turned on. Same thing in multi; where you
have to turn detail down. In GPL I never change my detail settings.

Why they didn't lock the sim time to real time I cannot fathom. GP2
was spoilt when I noticed this warping effect.

Anyway you play your GP2. There are lots of GPL racers already that
enjoy its state of the art physics model; nice graphics; great!
tracks; good sounds. Oh and net racing with up to 20 is possible -
though 5 to 10 is more likely to work well with little warping. IF the
host has a fast connect like ADSL or Cable.

GP3? GPL2 will likely be out before it.

Good idea, but.....read on.

Agreed! But our conclusion may differ....

What is your system? GPL needs 3Dfx or Rendition, anything else won't
do. A Pentium II is needed too.

Ah, you got Win98. The demo wasn't designed for Win 98. Try the
release version Ferrari, and then tell us the sound "sucks"

I guess not...

Chris, do yourself a favor, buy GPL.

Yep, gotta agree with ya there chris. As soon as I saw there was no opposite lock help
in GPL I knew they had stuffed it up. As we both know, GP2 was ultra realistic with the
opposite lock help enabled! It's a bit of a joke that this sim actually runs on currently
available hardware too. Not very sophisticated really!
