They work and they look fantastic.  It's almost like getting new tracks.
It is probably the first time you will race with full detail at these
tracks.  The surface textures look much smoother, even when you are close
to them, and all straight lines have almost no "jaggies".  Get it.

Does anybody know with the Rendition version of Indycar 2 whether or not you
can use the converted Indianapolis track and Nascar tracks and what do they
look like if they do work.

Steven,

How much RAM do you have? I installed Indianapolis to my Rendition version,
but the game says I have insufficient memory to load track. I only have
16MB and planning to upgrade to 32 in the near future, but I'm curious to
know if this is really the problem or not. It seems to me that the Laguna
or Elkhart Rendition tracks would eat up as much RAM as Indy would, and
they work perfect. Thanks for any answers.

Have you tried it using the 4-bit car set ? Just curious.

Berry,

I have 40MB of ram.  I wanted to try it with 16, but because of the SIMMS
I have, I could only do 32 or 8 MB.  To run in 8MB, I had to use the 4bit
car set.  I also re-ran the setup to use the 8bit mono Soundblaster driver,
instead of the 16bit stereo one, which should help some.  None of the enhanced
IndycarII tracks would load, but all of the standard ones did.  Of the
6 converted tracks I have, Las Vegas, Talladega, and Watkins Glen did load,
but Bristol, Indy, and Sears Point would not, due to insufficient memory.
Strange, because the Indy.dat file is only 1.1MB, while Laguna.dat, which
will load, is 2.22MB.  I suggest trying the 4bit carset, if you haven't
already.  Also, an 8bit mono soundcard choice might also help.  And, strip
down your config.sys & autoexec.bat as much as possible.  You don't need
any memory managers, don't load any cdrom drivers, or smartdrv.
Good Luck!

Hey guys,

Thanks to all of you for the 4bit carset advice. Loaded up Indy and it
works fine. God it's great to see Indy at 30fps. Now if only my other
carsets would work..... <G>

What do you mean by 4-bit?  Do you mean the carsets that come with the non-3D
version?  Are carsets that are available over the internet 4-bit?

The Rendition version of ICR2 comes with 2 carsets, 4bit95 and cars95.  The
4bit set is to allow the game to run in 8MB.  The cars95 set requires 12MB
ram.  They are the same 1995 cars.  I think the 4bits refers to number of
colors used.  The regular set is 8-bit.  The 4bit set doesn't look much
worse than the 8-bit set, due to the Rendition's anti-aliasing and bilinear
filtering.  I 'think' all other carsets are 8-bit, because I ran the sim
in 8MB, and out of 8 carsets I have, only the 4bit would work.  The
documention states that the 4bit set will not work with the paintkit.  Maybe
someone will come up with a patch to let the paintkit work with the 4-bit
cars, or a converter to make 4-bit sets out of 8-bit ones.

Dan,

Right now the only way to get it is to buy a Rendition card.  The full
Rendition version is included with the Intergraph Reactor and Sierra's
Screamin 3D, though I've heard the Screamin 3D is backordered.  The other
Rendition card, Creative Labs 3D Blaster PCI, doesn't come with it.
Sierra\Papyrus' site has nothing about a patch for the dos version, but
I'm sure they could, not too many files are different.  The 5 new 16 bit
tracks are pretty big, though.  The Rendition version requires a full hard
drive install, 75MB during installation, and 55 after the install is done.
I would get the Intergraph Reactor, its $150 until Christmas.  You can
order it direct at 1-800-692-8069.  If you haven't already, check out
their website at:

Get ready to be blown away!

How does one get ahold of the Rendition version of IndyCar II.
I have the DOS version, so is this a free/cheap upgrade?

What do you mean by 5 new 16 bit tracks?  Are only 5 out of 15 tracks in true
color and the rest the same as in the non-Rendition Indycar 2 version?

Yes, only 5 of the tracks have been updated with 16-bit color textures.
All of the tracks still get the full benefit of 3D acceleration
including bi-linear filtering, perspective correction, anti-aliasing,
etc...

I would like to know when is the right time to change a gear up
in GP2... is it when the yellow light is on , or should one wait until
the red one apears?
I am asking this because in GP1 the right time to change a gear
up was ( i think ) when there were still some 300/400 revs. until red,
but as GP2 is such a good sim. and as we can see in TV the pilots waiting
until the last light is on to change a gear up, i would like if someone of
you guys could tell me that.

Regards,
        Pedro Fernandes.

PS. sorry for my poor english.
