How do you go about changing the replay buffer size.  Or does it default to
the amount of ram you have.

Thanks

Edit this line in your core.ini

[Replay]
replayMemoryOverride=102400              ; Kbytes of replay memory to use
as you can see mine is set to about 100MB, as I run longer on-line league races.

I think this has been asked here (R.A.S.) before, and I think the
answer is "it depends", but here goes:

How many laps can you save with 100MB?  I guess I am mainly asking for
some elaboration on what it depends on.

TIA,
Gerald

You're right it does depend.  Mostly on how many other cars are in the race, as each car added
requires more data stored per lap.  With a full field, or near full field, it takes about 1MB per
minute of replay.  WHen I look in my replay folder, and compare stored replay times to size thats
the correlation I see for full/near full field races.

In addition to what "Biz" said, the number of laps your replay captures also
varies with the size of the track.  You will get MANY more laps in the same
replay file size at Martinsville than at Daytona.

Is this a function of lap times, or strictly track length?  i.e.,  a
lap at Martinsville is about 20 seconds, and Daytona is about 45.
Working from the estimate of 1 minute = 1 megabyte then in a 30 meg
replay file you would have roughly 90 laps at Martinsville and 40 at
Daytona for a full field.  Do you think this is accurate, or do you
see a greater disparity in number of laps?

I haven't tried to figure out the replay size Vs track size issue, Gerald.
;)  On my league's server I have the replay buffer set to 110 megs.  We run
35% races, with 16-20 cars per race.  The replay buffer will capture the
entire race at every track.... except Sears and the Glen. (those replays are
usually 3-5 laps short). At super speedways there is very little of the
practice session captured in the replay, while small to medium size tracks
will have 30-40 minutes of the practice session on the replays.  It is
certainly not simply a time issue, as we run our road course races with
cautions turned off, and those races generally take 1 hour while our regular
races take about 1.5 hours.  In fact, whether we race Marty or Dega, our
races are about 1.5 hours, but the amount of the practice session captured
in the replay will vary GREATLY between the short tracks and super
speedways.  All I know is that larger tracks with the same number of drivers
for the same amount of time (not laps) will require a much larger replay
buffer than short tracks.
