GP4 Can't get Split Axis to Work!

by <somecallme.. » Fri, 12 Jul 2002 02:15:32

I borrowed GP4 from a friend to see how shit it is compared to F1 2002
(which I'm really loving at the moment). However I can't even get my
Thrustamster Ferrarri FF wheel to work with it. It just won't work with it's
plit axis (how ***is that!).

Is there a fix for this?

It's quite fun as an arcade game with the keyboard but I'd like to see how
well it handles with a wheel. So far it seems exactly the same as GP3 (or 2
for that matter!) so I guess it handles just as poorly as GP3. It does look
quite nice although I do prefer the look and detail levels of F1 2002. And
Geoff needs to be shot for still using his awfull "processor occupancy" way
of programing which was bad enough on an Amiga in GP1!

Having tried it out I'm very glad I didn't buy it and bought F1 2002
instead. If I had it would have been sent back by now. If you can't get a
racing game working with a FF wheel what use is it?

Took me a while to figure out too!

Go to the control settings. You must choose a custom setting first for the
controller and then click on the pedals selection on the left. Open up the
pull down menu on the right for accelerator and reselect Controller A(Y)
(probably already selected - just reselect it).
A popup window will appear, move your accelerator and then with the mouse
select the axis that moves (RZ for me I think). Repeat for the brake (Z).
Then calibrate. I set my sensitivities to 0% for both gas and brake. Setting
up the gear shifts works exactly the same way. I also had to disable
joystick controlled menus which is tooked away under menu settings
somewhere, else the menus flicker like mad.

Now I need to tweak my wheel settings as I am finding the car very jumpy
around the center. Anyone got any good settings here. Using a momo myself.

Don't know what to make of the sim so far. Graphics look great on a XP 2100+
and GeForce 4600 with occupancy at 50% at 1280x1024 and maxed out details
except bump mapping. 36fps :-) Something just doesn't feel right, maybe a
lack of understeer sometimes. The car seems to turn in too fast.

Good luck,

Darren

That's cause it's not a sim, it's an arcade F1 racer.

Maybe maybe ...... but still it does some things better than EA's effort. I
just think the physics are ***ed up. GP3-2000 was better than GP4 in this
department. Are the cars turning around their centres?

I play and am enjoying both for different reasons.

They're both good, just in different areas. EA's has better physics and
depicts the race weekend in a whole lot more detail. Light at the end of the
pit straight in practise sessions, proper rev limiter, tons of details like
that. GP4 on the other hand has better AI (haven't played it that much yet,
so that's second hand info) and is a lot more accessible to people without a
wheel.

My main beef about GP4 is that it's just a minor graphical update, more
arcadey to drive, and shouldn't be nothing but a $15 upgrade to GP3.

Driving on rails, anyone? :)
