System Settings and Tweaks for Sim Racing

Guys....

Don't know about the rest of you but I am having trouble keeping track of
all the system settings and tweaks necessary these days to keep you system
working at peak performance and be able to sim race online with reasonable
FPS.  I have been using a bunch of "cheat sheets" and notes....randomly
filed in a notebook and it was all getting out of hand quickly!  So, I
decided to try to organize it.......the result of that can be seen at the
link below.

www.pabst-racing.com/webscreens/tweaks.xls

This is not entirely complete......missing settings for GPL and
F1-2002.....but all other settings are correct (for my system) and included.
If this is helpful to some of you.........that's great.  As I update my own
sheet....I'll append or update this one posted at PR.com.....and will repost
the link here from time to time.

Regards,

Tom

PS:  Don't know what "viewer" will be used if you don't have MS Excel
installed....maybe someone without it can tell me in a "reply post" here?

A small tip Tom; If your Excel is reasonably up to date you can save the
file as html. This way the file can be viewed in any browser, but it can
still be opened in Excel. In IE there will be an Excel button when you
browse a html file saved by Excel.

You can se an example here:

(Unfortunately I'm noware near the top of that list....)

Get OpenOffice, it's free, available for Windows, Linux and MAC
(I think), and reads and writes MS-proprietary formats very
well.

http://www.openoffice.org/

did I mention it's free, both as in speech and beer?

You may all know about these already, but here are some of the NR2002
tweaks I have seen mentioned on this list over the past months:

Good deal, Dave.....glad it will be helpful.  If you select "File/SaveAs" -
then you can customize it to your own system as needed, too.

Thanks, Jone.

I knew there was a way to do that, but couldn't think of it last night and
wanted to get this posted.  I kind of figured most people with new rigs
(most simmers these days) would have some form of Excel on their systems.
That might be a bad assumption.  If it becomes a problem, I'll make two
versions available.

Tom,

Just Curious -- in NR2002 settings, you're emphatic about turning 3D Audio off.
Why is that?

Bert

System Settings and Tweaks for Sim Racing

Bert...

This has to do with my WC***pit sound system....but I've also noticed a
similar thing on my desktop rig (used mostly for open wheel racing, but I do
track graphics on it for N2K2...so I do run it on this system some).

I don't know the cause, but the "effect" of having 3D audio checked is that
it disperses the sounds to the 6.1 channels in a manner that causes them to
lose distinction.  The spotter is more difficult to hear, the player engine
is softer and less "present" from the center speaker and I can hear no
improvement in the 3D placement of the other sounds, particularly the
opponent engine sounds.  I have to boost the sound levels across the board,
with 3D sound checked.....to achieve the same DB's (110db's) in the***pit
as I get with it unchecked.  One possible cause could be that I use the
"environmental sound effects" of the SB Live sound card.  Those "effects"
could be distorting the 3D sounds possibly?  I don't know for sure, but with
the 3D sound box unchecked, the overall sounds in N2K2 are dramatically
better....ON MY SYSTEM.  That doesn't mean that's true for everyone, of
course.

Don't know if this was the "answer" you were looking for, Bert?  Hope so.

Thanks for the reply, Tom.

I wasn't looking for any particular answer.  Was just curious whether keeping it
checked was a known problem, like a frame rate hit or something.  I haven't
compared the two (checked and un-checked), but I usually enable it if it's an
option in the sim.
